A Quick Lily Tip

By sandnsea2

When cutting back lilies after bloom, cut back by no more than half their height in order for the bulb to continue to be fed. When the stem turns brown and dries up, then it may be cut all the way back.

I've been trying to educate friends and acquaintances about that for about a decade now.
With ANY kind of bulb.
Either they just take the lawnmower to it, or they don't do anything at all and they end up with big old seedheads.........
Often makes me sad for the plants to the point that I fantasize about sneaking out in the wee hours with a shovel and "adopting" them!!!

Yes, your "adopting" them may well save their life! I tip my hat to you.

Abandoned/mistreated plants tug at my heart just like puppies and kittens do....
Life is all about life.
I prefer to be a good steward and nurturer.
Many people just aren't informed, which is why I'm glad you put up your tip.
And some don't care because they just don't get it, like they have a blind spot in their souls.

So true! Some cut lilies back completely, to the ground, after bloom. I wait until all leaves have yellowed and are falling or have fallen but there will always be those who can't manage to wait. It's a pity.
