I noticed these starting to sprout this past spring and at first thought they were Amaryllis ... but nope, not Amaryllis. Then I thought maybe some sort of Daylily or possibly Clivia. I don't know a thing about Day Lilies or Clivia and they haven't bloomed yet so I have no clue what they are. They've been growing next to boxwood shrubs in full shade of other plants and I've pruned stuff heavily in that area so they are now getting a little sun ... maybe they will bloom before summer ends. I pulled one up to look at the roots so maybe that will offer a clue? I hope someone might recognize the foliage or rhizomatous base and be able to point me in the right direction for a possible ID.

Thanks Dave, it does indeed look a lot like Hymenocallis, both the leaves and rhizome/bulb. The foliage reminded me of Lycoris radiata I had planted at the other house but when I pulled up the one plant it looked to be something else. I think I will dig them and move them to a sunnier spot to see what they do!

The bloom will certainly betray the true identity of this one! Smiling

I'm going to mark this closed for now and wait for blooms for an exact identity. Smiling

Well, it looks like my mystery plants turned out to be (Nile Lily) Agapanthus! I was so surprised because I've been growing Agapanthus for a long time and didn't recognize these as the Nile Lily. Maybe it's my age Green Grin! These plants were in the ground when I moved here a year and a half ago but they didn't bloom at all last year, probably because they were in deep shade and received no sun at all. I've kept that area pruned of overgrowth of shrubs and they now receive full sun for the first half of the day and one has finally put up a bloom stalk with buds forming:

I can now mark this as solved and close the thread.

Thanks for the closure! Beautiful bulbs too!

...but I'm curious, do you have Lycoris without a stripe on the leaves?

Purple: Nope, those are definitely Agapanthus, they are beginning to bloom.

OK, TY! Trying to find someone with Lycoris squamigera who might want to trade. Your comment about thinking they might be Lycoris gave me hope you might have that one in the yard somewhere. I have TONS of L. radiata, which all have a stripe on the leaf too, a red flower. Just looked up L. aurea, - wow those are pretty too!

I had Lycoris radiata (Red Spider Lily) at our other house but that's the only one I ever grew ... Wow, I love that L. aurea too, gorgeous flowers!

Moon, that is so sweet of you and I sure wish I had room for some at our new place but alas we moved @ 1 1/2 years ago and downsized in yard space big time! Sad

Hey Lin....if ya wind up with a tiny naked patch, just let me know Thumbs up There are pics of the blooms in the plant database. I remember you mentioning that downsizing was in the works, just didn't realize you already had.

Got it P-Opp. You are most welcome.
