They are just lovely, Lin and Hetty. My one Pitaya bud has blasted, I think. It is browning, and mushy but still not open. I am a night owl, stay up to watch the news at 11 so I walk out after that to check on the night bloomers. Pretty sure I did not miss it.

I did find out that the hummingbird moths (which are pollenators for the Pitaya) are very attracted to my hedychiums, though! Heard the fluttering, shined the light on the ginger blossoms and caught their bright little eyes hovering around the flowers. They move too fast to take a picture in the dark, sadly.

There's a huge old epi on a tree in the parking lot over at Selby. Next time we're driving by at night, we'll definitely venture in there to get a picture, maybe the car's headlights will provide enough light.

Mine still haven't bloomed Thumbs down That's a beauty and hopefully you will get fruit as well. At least I can console myself with lots of the pitaya fruit, they are piled for sale on tables at all the street corners now.

Hetty, that is one Gorgeous bloom!! I saw Pitaya (Dragon Fruit) cactus plants for sale at Home Depot Garden Center for $6.98 last week ... they were in one gallon pots but were small plants. I almost bought one but didn't. I don't much like thorny plants because I always seem to get jabbed by them.

I almost missed it - last night I thought I saw one bloom on the other cactus (same variety as the one above but much bigger plant) - went back to inspect it and it had a dozen open blooms. Gave one to a friend to take home.... Smiling

Yep. I'm going to be moving that plant soon ... to the deck out back where I will notice it more often.

I've had a night blooming cerus for about 20 years. It's HUGE! I found that if you let it just begin to open (say, about 9 PM), cut it right at the leaf, bring it inside and put it in a vase of water......it will continue to open right in front of your eyes! This way I get to enjoy the full show, it scents the whole room, and I don't have to be devoured by mosquitoes running in and out of the house to see it! I highly recommend this method.

Hi Sandi, welcome to ATP and thanks so much for that great tip! Now I will definitely be watching and waiting for the next buds on my plant. How wonderful it will be to have one of those fragrant and beautiful blooms to enjoy inside!!

I have Ipomoea alba (Evening Glory) which is also a night bloomer growing up a tree in the side yard. The large white flowers are really pretty and very fragrant, but once again you have to remember to be outside in the late evening and after dark to enjoy them. I also apparently sowed seeds in a container on the back deck and found a bud on it a few days ago. We've been doing some work (dismantling deck rails etc. in preparation for a screen room) and my husband was moving something one afternoon and bumped into the plant and knocked the Evening Glory bud off. I picked it up and threw it into the water behind the deck and a couple of hours later noticed the bud had opened in the water!! I commented to my husband that if I'd known that I would have stuck it in a vase of water ... tonight I'm going to pluck a bud before it opens and put it in a vase!

Great idea.....I would not have thought an ipomoea would bloom off the vine! Have you ever seen the evening ipomoeas (common name Moonflower) in colors other than white? I've heard people talk about them and I would love to know where to get some seeds of the colors.

Good luck with the remodeling.

It makes no sense for there to be other colors. White is nearly always the color of nightblooming flowers...

Well, . . . brugmansias are evening bloomers and they come in all shades of pink and yellow as well as white.

Hm. My brugs bloom all day. Shrug!
Specifically the night blooming plants are white to be visible in the dark and attract the nocturnal pollinators (usually moths).

I'd love it if there were other colors of Evening Glory!

There are a few plants that are evening/night bloomers that have color other than white, for instance some Water Lilies are night blooming: http://www.waterfordgardens.co...

And, Mirabilis jalapa (Four O'clocks): Four o'Clocks (Mirabilis jalapa) open in late afternoon and stay open at night.

I do agree with Hetty, true nocturnal flowers (those that aren't open in the daytime) are usually pure white or off white to pale yellow in color. The white or light color of the flower reflects the light of the moon and attracts night pollinators such as moths.
