Did I miss the discussion about this somewhere along the line? I just noticed the other day that in the db for a particular plant we have this "Related threads from our forums" section which is TOTALLY COOL!!!!!
I've noticed not all plants have it. How does it get there? Who puts those there? I know I'm asking the same question twice. Sticking tongue out

I noticed it on this plant
Lily (Lilium pardalinum)

It would be/ will be amazing when we get this on each plant in the db!

I'm loving this feature! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I don't recall if we ever discussed this or not. This is a feature that I've been playing with for some time and I've taken it off and put it back a couple times. At the moment it's up and I think it'll stay up for the time being. I think it's a great feature and I enjoy seeing it.

It's an entirely automated process.

If you're looking at a cultivar of a plant for which we have a forum (for example, daylilies or roses) then it will search only inside that forum for mentions of this cultivar. The threads it finds are then shown.

Otherwise, it searches all the forums looking for threads that mention the entire name (genus, species, cultivar) of the plant in question.

Well, I hope it stays! I like it a lot. And it's very cool that it'a an automated process. It's very helpful when you can go to a thread where a particular cultivar was mentioned or discussed. You can get a much better idea of the plants habits depending on how much it was discussed but you also know whom to ask it about it if there are several people talking about it but only 1 put photos in the db or has it in their plant list.

It's a keeper Dave! I tip my hat to you.

Fantastic feature!

Dave, is it appropriate/possible to expand the search to a partial name (genus, cultivar) as many plants are described that way?

ex. Colocasia esculenta 'Big Dipper' Elephant Ear (Colocasia 'Big Dipper')

searched: Colocasia 'Big Dipper'
http://garden.org/search/index.php?q=Colocasia+%27Big+Dipper...

I'm not being clear again. Sorry. If a DB entry has genus, species and cultivar; and the automated process Dave described searches for that name; then the abbreviated genus and cultivar description in a forum won't be found; and therefor a "Related threads from our forums" won't show up.

Evan, I like your idea and I have implemented it, but it won't take effect for Colocasia because those have their own specific forum and only the cultivar name is searched, and the search is restricted to just that one forum.

Which forum Dave? I think there's "generally" more posts on Tropicals than Aroids, at least at this point in time.

Interesting, I thought we had a forum specifically for elephant ears and I see now that we do not.

Looking more into this, I found where I had a case where it was skipping the "Related threads" search altogether if a parent plant existed but no forum for that plant was there.

So I fixed all that, and related threads are now showing for colocasias (and others) like they are supposed to. Thanks for the help Evan!
