Wow -- cool to know! They are so hardy arent they -- just water and waaalaa!! I got some miracle grow soil for them too!

Now since I usually NEVER pot anything up -- what do I do with these in the winter?? Confused

I potted one up last year. It stayed in an unheated garage all winter.
It's still growing in the pot which is now outside. Amazed me that
it lived like that. I didn't even water it all winter. Forgot about it.

Daylilies are SO forgiving. That's why I love them so very much. Forget them in a pot and they grow, forget them soaking in water and they grow, whatever! nodding

Thanks Christine for posting that photo. This is my first year with blooming daylilies and one of them is doing exactly what yours are, and I was wondering what was going on ! Now I know ! Hurray!

Yes, they are forgiving. I piled up some that are going to be composted. It has
rained quite a bit recently, and I noticed most of the daylilies in the pile
have loads of healthy green foliage on them. There were a few blooms on twisted
scapes reaching for the sun.

Well being in MN and considering we hit the deep freeze I am afraid if I keep them in pots over the winter they will die -- I had 20 lily bulbs in pots from one of Bert's Bulb sales and they were wonderful bloomers all sumer etc etc... I left them in pots over the winter and never put them in the ground -- to my horror the next spring ALL died! I was heart broken!! Crying Crying Crying

I did that with daffodils and they died too. Maybe if they were put in a basement or possibly in a garage that is sheltered it may be ok. I've never tried it yet.

I am thinking maybe if I put them in a back stall in the horse barn and cover them with a bale of hay they may do better! Or like you said in the basement -- I do have an enclosed porch that is not heated (meaning no basement underneath it but it is attached to the house) ~ I could possibly stick them in there too. Shrug!

Well it doesn't hurt to try I guess. I may do an experiment and try some covered with mulch in the garage and see what happens. I overwintered a pot of Majorum one year in the garage and it lived.

I had a dozen daylilies in pots last fall. Planned to get them planted this spring. Stuck them in my garage, which stays about 40 degrees all winter. Then they got bugs & rust showed up. So I stuck those pots outside in a well protected area. (local daylily society sale had some rust apparently)

Spring blew in with that month long early heat wave and rain, then it got frigid again in April - and I lost every single potted daylily. Never again will I overwinter a daylily in a pot. I have since been told if I tipped those pots on their side they would have been fine. I also think that if I had been able to keep them in my garage over the winter they would have been fine- my parsley did great all winter there with occasional water and the southern sun coming in the windows. But the only way to get rid of the bugs and rust, was to let that stuff freeze. And I didn't think I should pull the pots back inside after allowing that.

So my current potted daylilies will be planted within the month, even if I move them again next spring. I am not going through that again.

I am going to plant my potted new arrivals in the ground also.
A seedling did fine last year in the garage, but I don't want to
take a chance on my new purchased ones.

I discovered this year that year-old plants don't like to be moved. It showed
them down a bit, but will have to move these in the spring regardless.

I actually have a prolif growing on an unbloomed scape - this one never bloomed this summer _ i had some that the buds just burned up on).

Like my other prolif, I lopped it off (never saw roots) stuck it in the ground, watered and so far, so good ~Jan

My husband loves to root proliferations and almost never loses one, unless there are absolutely no visible roots of any kind. Let me show you a picture of Golliwog, a brand new in the garden dl for us this year. It bloomed beautifully, and then put out 2 proliferations right at the base of the clump. One prolif died before we could get it out, but the other one is now planted in our "nursery" bed, and beginning to grow. We are thrilled, hope to have a good sized new Golliwog to join its mommy next spring.

I love Golliwog. I have had it for many years. I need to move it to a more sunnier location though.

As I walked around the garden this morning I noticed a few more prolifs. Erin Farmer that is planted out of my yard behind the garage has one. I am thinking of rooting that one and planting it in my yard. I enjoy that one and seeing it without having to walk out of the yard every day would be nice.

RE: prolifs in the winter, in the north

Dormant daylilies will go dormant - light conditions

So many aren't dying, they are just going dormant.

If a plant is too small and put outside or planted outside, they will freeze/thaw and die.

If you do want to put them outside, I am one who advocates turning the pots on the sides. You don't want water in the pot, freezing the crown. Or freeze thaw, freeze again, with wet crowns and roots.

Most all plants that I turn on their sides, or put under a bench with a tarp over them, do fine. But they are not prolifs. Prolifs, I have kept inside. I don't have rust. And would water spray off aphids. I have been successful, and I have been not successful. But hey, they are free plants!

In the south, I hear they that you can just put them directly in the ground. My roots don't start growing until Oct/Nov!

Yes, here in the south we can just put them in the ground. I usually leave them on the scape until it starts to turn brown and either stick it beside the mother plant or pot it up. Most of the time the prolifs are almost the size of the mother plants fans when planted.

So Bobbi are you saying that if I don't plant my seedlings I can leave them in their pots all winter turned on their sides and covered?? I have never done that before. I usually plant my seedlings in August. I have lost some but most survive. I do mulch them a bit.
