My very first Honeydew Melon. My biggest fear is to pick it too soon. Do you think it's ripe enough yet?

I'd say, not quite yet.

Is the tendril that attaches it to the plant at all withered?

Which honeydew is it?

Thank you!

No idea which one it might be. We got a really nice one at the grocery sometime last winter and saved the seeds from it Big Grin

I've picked them too soon before, and it's such a huge letdown. Now, I usually want to see ants attracted to them, or to actually be able to smell a sweetness before I pick. By that time they're just on the edge of being overripe...perfect (IMHO) for home use. Smiling

I have found with my cantaloupe that when they are ripe you can smell them and if you lightly brush against them they come right off the stem. No tugging needed.

I love varieties that do this, but not all do. Many varieties are like watermelons and hold on tight even well after they are ripe.

The smell test never fails, though. You should always be able to smell the ripe fruit when it's ready.

That is good to know, Dave, that not all varieties are as easy as my Ambrosia were. Smiling

I had wondered...the leaves looked more like a squash.

To me, it looks like Spaghetti squash.

I thought that at first too...but I can't see us saving seeds for that because I've never bought one that I can remember...any second guesses?

Well, you could always go back to the grocery store and see what kinds of squash they have in stock! Hilarious! Oh, my, what a let-down!

Ha ha, figured it was something you liked at least, or you wouldn't have kept seeds! You know, I've never cooked spaghetti squash. Gonna have to try it one of these days.

I love spaghetti squash. Thumbs up

I didn't grow any this year because our store always carries them...decided to try some others in that space instead. Now, I'm wishing I had! Hilarious!

Mmmm...lots of butter, and a sprinkle of Parmesan....Yum!

Green Grin!
