I will be the last person to say I know it all any plant. I will see how this one goes. It has been 2 year so far. The first year we had snowmagedon winter. We had so much snow non-stop. I could see that winter as good for insulation year. Last winter was the warmest on record.

The lady in Michigan does not see Spring until June. She is in a very sever cold part of Michigan and she has the one I am growing and another light pink hardy glad that she has had for over 10 years.

I am not saying anyone is right or wrong just curious of why some catalogs (White Flower) are selling some as hardy and as a rule people do not get the info that it is possible to grow a perennial Glad. Perennial to me means at least 10+ years without lifting.

The lady that gave me this one was thinning because they were crowding her other plants. So it was not only surviving it was multiplying.

I agree I agree
I dont know everything or hardly anything about glads other then what i said. I do know that plants are funny things and i dont thing it is all "they have a green thumb" I think some plants can and do adapt to there area just like humans do. I have seen and disused this on many occasions

First plants do evolve just try to kill a weed that has been killed for years with one chemical sooner or later it becomes resistant to that chemical.
Second If a smaller supplier finds some kind plant that seems more resistant to disease or to cold they JUMP on the wagon and say its cold hardy or disease resistant. It might not be always it might be just a year or two of good luck.

Third and most important of all ....If someone claims to know it all i listen , hear , and say thanks turn my back and walk away!!!

I'm just plain old happy when/if a few come back. I don't expect the big-flowered and fancy ones to do so, but it's a neat surprise when they do. Big Grin

I never manage to get mine dug up...wouldn't have a good place to store them even if I did. Hilarious!

@Mike That is why I said, I do not know it all that is just not in my make up.

chelle, I would have never been able to remember to dig things up. All my tender and tropical plants are grown in pots for the patio. At the end of the season I cut everything down and put them in my laundry room. When I go down to wash cloths I give everybody a half a glass of water. I have over 100 tropical and tender plants that come in for the winter.

Glads grow great in huge pots with a Dahlia and some coleus. You can have a pretty blooming garden in a pot that you do not have to dig up.

Cinta, I'm not taking Spring Hills anything as gospel, LOL. I've grown the hardy glads, and that's what they actually look like. I just thought that was a good pic of them.

Cinta, you can be our test person. We'll make you report every year how they do, and I hope they do well for you.

We're in similar zones, and probably similar conditions as you get a lot of snow there too. My daughter and I both grow the non hardy glads AKA hybrid glads and they return most years. I have not had much luck with what they call the perennials, but a few came back.

Here's some of the hybrid glads my daughter grew, and it's the third year for them. As you'll see the shape of them is more like Priscilla than the hardy glads at Spring Hills.

Here's some great info about Priscilla in our database. I looked on Daves Garden, and it says hardy to Z8.

Okay Polly I will report back. It did double this year, I think zone 8 is what they normally say for glads. I have never had any other glads come back so I started growing them in pots.

And, you can increase the hardiness of lots of plants by planting next to the foundation of your house where the ground stays warmer. I have 2 old glads (not the "hardy" ones) that have been in the ground for nearly 30 years and they bloom faithfully every year.

Yes Karen that is another good tip. I have done that with Tea roses because I like the form of Tea roses but they do not survive in my climate. But the ones I plant close to the house I have had better luck with survival.
