Hello everyone! So nice to find this forum.
I have had daylilies for about 3 years now.
I started buying on Ebay. The only plants
I've bought were from large lots "lost tag sale" of what the seller
only called hybrids. I am just wondering how
would I ever know if any of these so called "hybrids"
actually may have names, or if they are unique?
Don't get me wrong, they are all pretty.
I'm trying to head down the path of actually
knowing a little more about my daylilies. If they
are tets, diploids and so on.
I guess what I really want to know is, can I name
any of these as my own without knowing the parents
and the ploidy.
Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions? Let
me know if anyone has any of these daylilies!

Hey Trish, nice to have you here

No you cannot name any of these as your own UNLESS you bought them as seedlings and the originator of them said you could do whatever you want with them (that you own all of it). If they are actual hybrids or lost tags then they have most likely been registered already and the seller just doesn't know for sure what they are because the tag was lost.
There really is no way to know for sure what they are since there is over 70,000 registered daylilies, it would only be a wild guess because some do look a lot alike.

As for ploidy of them, the way to test is if you have a daylily that you know is either tet or dip and pollinate the unknowns with it. I will say that dip pollen will pollinate a tet daylily sometimes, the pod will just fall off after a few weeks or so. If the pod stays on and matures and ripens then that will be what the ploidy is on the unknown. Sometimes a daylily is infertile and won't set pods so you may never know the ploidy if it does that.

The next to the last one looks just like Pandora's Box, but there may be others that look very close.

You may find out the name of them, since there are a lot of helpful people here. Several of them look really familiar to me, but I can't put a name on them. The next to the last one though, I'm almost positive that it's Pandora's Box. The fourth from the bottom may be Fairy Tale Pink, but again, I'm not positive. And yes, I'm sure they are all hybrids.

If you can get bloom measurements, and height, it would help to figure out which ones they are. So many look pretty much alike, but have much different sizes. I think they are all very pretty, and you could always hybridize them yourself and get a baby of your own to name! It's very easy to do!

Could the last one be Elegant Candy??? It's not as pink as mine but then again I don't know what time of day the pic was taken and different soils can change appearance.

If you bought them without names, I wonder if they are seedlings. By saying "lost tag" maybe the seller thought they could get more for them.

There really is no way to know, for sure, what they are. There are so, so many daylilies that look alike. And, photos can vary the color, making it look like a different plant than it is.

You say you want to sell them. If you do, please sell them without names.

One of the problems with guessing a name is what happens down the road, when the person who buys the plant gives it to someone else and they give to someone else... Pretty soon you have a lot of miss named plants out there. Say one of those people want to make seeds... Counting on the genetics that you guessed about.

If you had a list of names and asked us to match the flowers to the list, that **might** be possible. Without a list, and given the seller did not know the names, it would be better to leave them as "NoID"

Thanks for the helpful info. And yes, when I do go to sell when I thin them out I will sell as NO ID. It's not fair to daylily growers to sell with an improper, incorrect name. I will try to find the sellers I bought from and get a list of names they have. Now is it true I can hybridize them and register the seedling it produces even though I will not know the name of the parents?

Most gardener's know that they can get named daylilies for a rather cheap price.

No names / lost tags here get sold as landscape plants at $2 piece!

There are beginning daylily newbies that would probably buy them. I used to sell unnamed varities (seedlings) for $l0 a dozen and I sold several at that price.

I'm NOT looking to make a fortune! I wasn't looking to make money at all! I am just very inquisitive and intrigued about the plants I have now that they are growing beautifully. I will have to divide them soon and don't want to throw them away. I'm sure there is someone on Ebay, like myself, who will appreciate a mystery grab bag at a really cheap price.

Trish, there are many people who want nice landscape daylilies who don't care about a name. They care more about what the bloom looks like. Your daylilies can probably be sold or they would make nice gifts for friends or family.

Yes there are plenty of people who just want landscape daylilies and don't care if they have names, they worry more about the colors.
If I wasn't hybridizing or entering shows then I wouldn't worry so much about names and would just enjoy them in the garden.

Well that's how I see it. I just wanted a pretty yard and my neighbors love it. I'm just now getting more serious about daylilies, but I'm just in need of info. That was the reason for this post and I've gotten some great info! Thanks to you all
