That second one is interesting -- almost like and Iris!

JWWC said:Allow me to clarify:

I dont believe they are crud, and I understand that some hybridizers focus on the form. I meant, in a lighthearted way, that they can look like flowers that simply don't open well. I guess sarcasm is difficult on the Internet.

I knew what you meant right away. Hilarious! When I saw a couple of my seedlings bloom for the first time this year, I've laughed to myself that I came up with a new form, and it was pretty bad!

Jan and all,
I can understand that the angle of the photos may give an impression that these blooms are not open when we are accustomed to seeing flat on face shots. The focus is not on what is seen on a flat face but rather what we see when the petals fold revealing the petal surface to the back and standing vertically. With this variation, a variation seen in one of the three Sculpted sub-forms - Pleated, the pleating brings what is normally seen on a the petals horizontal plane to a vertical one. For a second, imagine some of the wonderful patterns we have on the face brought upward....showing on the inside face (normal) and then also revealed to us by the folding of the petal from this upright angle. This will take time and while some of these early upright variations may not appeal to some gardeners, for hybridizers they are a previously unexplored treasure chest of possibilites. There are still plenty of other Sculpted forms that are not as extreme to be enjoyed.

Here are a few images of the 2011 fall intro's....non-sculpted this time Smiling

Thunderstorms all day yesterday. Waynes World and There's A Place are great patterns. Most days the watermark of There's A Place shows a clear blue.

Here's a fun one, The Levitating Ananuki from the Fall '07 intro's. Registered at 64 inches tall it grows much taller in my garden, 68" this year

Another from the '07 line up, Still Mornings Mist. One of my favorites with super branching.

And going back one more year to fall '06, Waterpocket Fold. A sweet, extremely clear orchid.

Thanks Char. The Levitating Ananuki is one I haven't seen before. It's registered as a late and dormant and wondering if it's a rebloomer for you.

The Levitating Ananuki doesn't rebloom for me. Registered as a late, it has nice br/bdc so fills the space here between the mids and frost. In a normal year I rarely get rebloom on anything, our season is just to short. Even this year with the earlier start I am not seeing rebloom scapes on anything, including northern bred rebloomers. TLA is also registered as nocturnal, which it is, and the blooms last well into the evening the next day so I would say easily extended as well. It's also fertile, although reaching the blooms to pollinate them requires carefully bending the scapes or...a stepladder Smiling

Curt's 2012 spring intro, Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco, is registered at 73". I've admired it as a sdlg on several of my visits to Ohio and hope to add it to the garden in the future. His extra tall ones are fabulous in the center of island beds. Just be sure to give them some room, the leaves on my large clump of Notify Ground Crew (Hanson 2000) are waist high!

Thanks Char. After I read your post this a.m. I had to run out and move Notify Ground Crew. It's new here and I just plopped it in a corner with not a lot of room to spread. I prefer nocturnals and if I can figure out where to put TLA, I'm going to buy it.

Oh, JWWC ! I probably shouldn't even comment, but someone, ( Curt) that has been working on sculpted forms for 30 years certainly isn't interested in introducing crud. Curt has more passion in following his own artistic ideals than anyone I know. The sculpted forms are a breath of fresh air ! even if not eberyone's cup of tea. I'll have to go through images and see if I can add some more.

Sunny
