Juli, I read something like that about Frans Hal. If you don't pollinate it early it will self itself. That's what I was told by another daylily hybridizer on DG.

Say that again Cindy??? What will it do by itself?? Confused

Self pollinate. Don't ask me how but that's what a daylily hybridizer told me. I would think the bees or ants would have to be involved somehow??

If the pistil is shorter than the anther, I can see how they could self pollinate pretty easily. Also, I don't know for sure, but are the ones that are bee pollinated considered self pollinated???

Oh okay!! I see what you mean now! Yeah maybe a little wind or movement or something if the pistil is shorter than the anther! That is neat!

Mona, bee pollinated ones probably would not be considered self pollinated because you don't know where the bees have been. They carry lots of pollen on them.

Well I planned on harvesting some seeds today but it is raining. We sure need the rain though and I am not complaining one bit.

It's raining here as well. A nice misty rain has been coming down all morning. I am glad to get some. The garden needs a good drink plus I'll be able to pull some weeds when it's done raining!!

I collected my last pod today. 12 seeds in a small pod, figured it would only have 5 or 6. Wish it would rain here. We need it SO badly!!!

I haven't harvested any seeds yet since none are ready. I had some Stellas with pods on them that I hadn't noticed, and those opened, but the four I've got growing don't look close to ready yet. Normally, I don't harvest any until the end of Sept. or the first of October, but this year is anything but normal.

I sure wish we'd get some rain, too. It seems to rain all around us, but not at our house. I think we got about 20 rain drops the other night, and that was it. They keep saying it's going to rain, but so far, nothing. What a horrible year it's been.

Pods are maturing early because of all the hot weather we have been having. I think I have harvested at least 50 already.

I just harvested 2 pods from Moonlight Orchid that were yellow/brown and spongy when squeezed. When I opened them, both pods had totally white seeds. Has anyone ever had that happen???

I had some pods that were still green and had not opened until I squeezed them and the seeds were already moldy.

Natalie said:They should be ready if it's cracking open. I always give mine a light squeeze, and if the pod makes a cracking noise, I harvest them. If the top is opening, you better grab them because they can easily fall out.

or get earwigs inside...

One more pod to gather here. It is taking forever, it seems,
to ripen. The bottom of the fridge drawer is full of seeds, and I have
no idea how many are in there.

YUCK is right bb!!! I've never found an earwig in any of my seed pods. Come to think of it, I haven't found any bugs in mine.

I've had ants, spiders and some kind of tiny(and I mean tiny) little dark red bug that I have no idea what it is. Don't know what an earwig is so, here I come google. I'lll be back.

To borrow a new pharse OMG!!!! I squealed like a little girl when I was looking at these things on google and of course DH had to know what I was looking at. Then he told me that they get inside people's heads and I freaked!!!! Do you hear me, freaked!!!! How in the _______ do these things get into heads???? He said that's why they are called "EAR" wigs. Ok, I've seen them a very few times outside. lf I ever find one inside the house, that's it, I'm calllllllinng Orkin immediately. In my head, welllll, maybe that's what's causing all that ringing in my ears????
