Our labrador retriever runs down our 300' driveway to get the newspaper each morning. Lately, she's been stopping partway there, turning around, and looking at us as if to say, now what was i going out here for? And we have to yell "fetch the PAPER!", and she takes off again.
She does have a grey muzzle, so i guess she's getting to geezer.
We're in a massive remodeling project and therefore purging old items we don't use, and it is soooo hard for me to let go of things I've had since I was in college. i have memory problems, and physical objects help me remember. *Blush*

Well -- I had to go to Google to see who James Lee Burke is, Polly. Never heard of him before. Writes mysteries, eh? My fave reading genre. I also checked Amazon to see if his books are available on Kindle -- becauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse I just got one. And they do! I think I'll be acquainting myself with Mr. Burke's writing complexities in the near future! Thanks for the heads-up!! I tip my hat to you.

Polly -- is there one that you would recommend for my first selection?

I am enjoying the Kindle -- thanks. I've already read one book on it, have started a second, and have two more downloaded. I've had it for a week!! Thumbs up

Our public library loans books on Kindle. You can get a card from about any larger library and access their collections also. They do limit how many you can have checked out at once.

I'm going to look for some Burke books. My favorites are John Grisham's 'A Painted House', Homer Hale's 'October Skies', and Garrison Keiller's 'Lake Wobegone Days'.

Are those mysteries, Paul? I'm always looking for a good mystery.

Be warned, James Lee Burke is heavy reading, especially the Robicheaux series. I think I learn a new word every two pages. I do quite a few re reads on his.

'A Painted House' is about 3 generations of a family trying to eke out a living raising cotton in Arkansas in the 1950's. I love the relationship of the boy with his parents and grandparents. I've read it several times and always shed a few tears at the end. "October Skies' was also called 'Rocket Boys' and is about boys trying to build a model rocket from scratch. Reminds me of my youth. 'Lake Wobegon Days' is almost like a compilation of short stories about family relationships. I liked the early Laurence Saunders Mysteries but the later ones I read were short on mystery on long on sex so I gave up on them. I read in spurts, read several and then don't read at all for a while. I suspect I will be reading more this winter when the weather gets bad and I can't spend time in the garden.
