I have been getting them from the North American Rock Garden Society and I don't believe there is an additional charge for shipping, though you do have to be a member.

From googling, I see that they are available from various other places - a random example (looks like they charge 7 cents each for an order of 2000):

Yes, I've bought them from Diane in the past when ordering seeds.

I don't save that many seeds anymore. It's a job I really hate. I have cleaned and bagged a few this year which I needed to mail for trades. The rest are still sitting in my dining room, waiting to be cleaned up a bit, sorted, bagged, and stored. It's November 13, and they're still cluttering my dining room, residing on my shelves. I'm the ultimate procrastinator when it comes to saving seeds.

Thanks, Caroline.

This is also really helpful information. Thumbs up

Combining purchases (seeds and envelopes) makes the shipping cost much more justifiable; to me anyway. Big Grin

No problem, Chelle! Yes, NARGS is an excellent organization for anyone interested in alpine and rock gardening.

Here's the general forum - lots of good info there on rock gardening and on gardening in general, plus various other interesting topics (photo essays on specific species of rock garden plants, photos essays of alpine trips, etc.):

http://nargs.org/smf/index.php

Here's the main website. There is also a very good index here of alpine plant photos (see NARGS Photo Galleries) - very useful for anyone trying to ID plants... or just to incite plant lust! Hilarious!

Years ago I had a rather dramatic rock garden failure. Even the gaillardia refused to return! Hilarious!

Perhaps by now I'm better equipped to soak up the necessary information. I hope so because I'd like to do a small version of a rock garden in my newest bed. I'm in the process now of seed selection for it...one of my favorite nasty weather pastimes. Big Grin

I like the 2x3" Ziplocs because they only cost 1 c ent each from Wal-Mart.

They give room for lots of text on a paper llabel, and let you read the label THROUGH the Ziploc. And they are easy-open, easy-reclose. For some seeds I'll use 1.5"x1.5" Ziplocs, to save space when I don;t have a lot to write on the label.

Plastic that thin (1-2 mils) actually does let a LITTLE humidity esacape SLOWLY, right through the plastic (so says Drierite). And I believe that humidity escapes even faster through the Zip closure, which is clearly not heremetic. I often find that I can squeeze a little asir out of Ziplocks even after they are closed!

Here are some of my favorite online sources for Zippies, but it is hard to beat Wal-Mart price of one cent with no minimum order and no S&H!

I love the big glassines for ORGANIZING smaller Ziplocs into bundles. it makes them easier and faster to find.

I can open a "humidor" and quickly pull out one glassine envelope, then seal it again quickly to keep humidity out. I shouldn't call a tub with silica gel dessicant a "humidor", I should call it a "dessicdor".

I might have 10-20 of something that I gathered or split, and want to be ready to trade or give them away.
I have several varietes of Salvia coccinea to keep separate from Salvia farinacea and other Salvias. I have separate bundles for Cosmos, Lobellia, Petunias and Violas.

When I tape glassine down, I always stick a tiny slip of paper onto the end of the tape, a little wider then the tape and 1/8-1/4 inch wide. That gives me something to grab when I peel the tape back. If you're dexterous, you can just fold the tape end over onto itself to give youi a fingernail-catcher.

Glassine can be expensive! Yes, 7 cents is easier to find than less. Also check to see if they are "top open" or "side open".

I'll buy glassine from ULINE (cheaper but poor quality) or "Clearbags".

I like the 3x5.5" glassine "# 1 Peanut Bags" because I can stuff 20-25 2x3" Ziplocks into one 3x5.5"glassine bag, and they take up less space in my storage tubs. $22 per 1,000 or 2.2 cents each before S&H.

Those are good to get a group order together for! However, if you only want a few hundred bags, you wind up paying much more for postage than for the bags. I think postage for a bubble mailer is now $1.95 for the first three ounces. (BTW, ULINE sells cheap bubble mailers IF you want to buy 250 or so!)

I think I have a lifetime supply of the smaller galssines, since I don't use them as often. I MIGHT live long enough to use up the 3"x5.5" Peanut bags I didn't split!

This might still bethe best place to buy small numbers of organ za bags:

FETPAK used to have deals for very tiny colored Ziplocs, but they had a minimum order size or big S&H last time I checked.
