I read an article be Barry Blyth that said the leaves provide nutriments for the plant over winter, and not to cut them until spring, so I don't. Yet my good friend who lives a few miles from me cuts hers down every fall, and she has beautiful iris too. I think it's a crap shoot. I might try the burning thing this fall on a few that are away from the buildings, just to see if it works.

Severity of winters makes a big difference I think. Where winters are mild or snow cover is reliable, iris leaves will stay green all the way through and there is likely a benefit to keeping the leaves intact. Here, where subzero temperatures are routine and snow cover is erratic, the leaves are dead by mid-winter (if not sooner) and there's really no reason to keep them.

I think the irises go dormant under the snow cover, though, so I don't know what benefit the green leaves would have.
