Smiling I love white daylilies, and I think your seedling no.6 is my favorite Thumbs up . I don't have Ice Age Frills, but I do have Voila Francois, which is brand new in our garden this year. All the photos I saw of it before I bought it were showing it as very white. However, here ours seem to be like yours, more of a cream color. Nevetheless, it is a beauty, and I have a photo of it. You might be interested in checking it out for your breeding program. Oh, yes, your pink seedling no. 3 is my favorite of the pinks, but all your seedlings look pretty impressive. Good luck with your DL program, and hope to see you as a "regular".

Thank you Avedon, glad to hear you like it here too, I have past up Viola cause it just doesn't look white enough for me, I normally work with snow crystal, SP Ivory Icon, Tet ralph Henry, Michael Miller,Ronald Reagan, King Solomon, Km Lemon Sorbet and Arctic Lace, the last two are my favorites.

Hey Hector,

Nice to see you over here. I knew Hector when he used to be on Gardenweb. I'm here cause it is so easy, people are nice and the owner of this forum (Dave) is nice enough to let us use it for free. It also has all these nice smiley faces we can use: Welcome! Hurray!

My favorite white is Snow Crystal, I think, well it is pure white. Then I love Irish Halo and Fringy.

Betja said:I just wish the white ones were really white. White irises can be pure white, so I expected to see pure white daylilies when I started to collect them a few years back. But alas, I now understand that in the daylily world cream is white.

VOILA FRANCOIS is just about my favorite white, although for me it's a very light apricot. And I love MICHAEL MILLER too. SNOW CRYSTAL is also a nice one, but in the garden its stamens seem to turn black and that bothers me a little bit. I have Fred's LILLIAN'S VAPOR TRAIL but it hasn't bloomed for me yet.

And I absolutely hate it when the hybridizers play with the colors on their daylily images. The one that comes to mind that I know we discussed before over in DG is the hybridizer's picture of WEDDING GOWN. But at least you can tell that that image has been modified (color was actually reduced to make it look pure white) by looking at the color of the foliage. And I've read complaints by people who later saw the actual blooms. But I also know that colors in photos can look very different between sunlight and shade in anyone's pictures, and that certainly isn't intentional. And pictures of whites taken later in the day will look whiter too, possibly because the very light color in the bloom fades away in the sunlight.

Hector, your white seedlings look very white and are really beautiful. Are any of them pure white? That would be really terrific if they are. And I love your pinks, especially that fifth one down. Really gorgeous! Some of our members who hybridize have their own threads of their seedlings, and we love it when they include the parentage of the seedlings.

Thank You Betja, I'm with you when it comes to hybridizers photos, I only buy plants once I see them pictured in someones garden, I too read all the thread you all had going at DG, Before that I though wedding gown was the answer to my prayer cause I always wanted to create a pure white and this would be one to work with, But I never bought it cause I never saw any other photos of it, And when I read the thread I knew then it wasnt for me. I want to create a real tall with lots of flowers white--white . the two that I posted stay white all day but they are not very tall, I have a bridge plant that is awesome! Its 40" some inches tall with more buds than you can shake a stick at but the color is not there yet. picture inclosed.

Hi Hector, as a lover of white daylilies, I want to commend you on your goal of breeding a true white daylily. I only have two DLs I consider white and they are the oldies Joan Senior and Sunday Gloves. I don't know if you have ever seen Westbourne Miss Personality, but it is one I would like to have. It is listed as a white self and something I really like about it is the edge is white. It seems to me so many of the "white" daylilies do not have white edges. (However, WB Miss Personality is a diploid and you are going with tets.) One reason I liked your white seedling pictures No. 6 and 7 is that the edges appear white. The last pic you posted is really interesting, love the height and lots of buds, and I like the edge. I'm sure we will be seeing more of your "babies" in the future, look forward to it.

I'm really loving Snow Crystal and I've already put Irish Halo and Fringy on that forever growing list of mine. I bought several pretty "whites" 4 years ago: Arctic Lace, Victorian Lace(this one should be grown by all), Boundless Beauty, Inimitable, seems like I got a few more, but the old mind is blank(stays that way).

Your seedlings are winners. I think it was the second white one that I really like It looks nearly WHITE. Hope it is registered or maybe alteast sold as seedlings and you really need to let me know if you do? nodding

Mona, I agree with you on Victorian Lace. I added it a couple of years ago, and it's one of my favorites. Mine isn't what I'd consider white. It's much more yellow for me, but the yellow looks darker in the picture than it does in person. I also have Sunday Gloves, and love it, but can't find my picture. It's another one that isn't exactly white for me, but it's close.

I'd like to see a white daylily like your iris! But, what I'd really like is a black daylily (really back, not dark purple or red), with a white edge, or a white daylily with a black edge. That would be something to see!

Thank you Mona, They are both from Snow crystal and fringy one of them is taller than the parents and i think one of them has a little frindge to it, you can see it more on the first year flower, Victorian lace is one I've had from day one but I don't cross it with whites. next years flower should be the final look and then we will decide.Thumb of 2012-09-07/yugo20/ccaf5b

I tend to call "white" daylilies cream because most of mine really do have a yellow or cream color to them. I also use the term "near white" when describing my seedlings and their parents.

Your seeding is so close to white. Wow, it fantastic!!

Natalie, I dream of a midnight blue with stark white edge and throat(not yellow, white!). Now I've never even thought of white with black, but that would stop EVERYBODY in their tracks and might even be fatal to a few of us old ones. Death caused by such an extreme inhalation of air into the lungs with that great big OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH That would be a "drop dead" goregous daylily! Big Grin

Whoever- it's just a matter of time- develops a TRULY white (or black) daylily will be famous, and make some money. But.... unlike reds, pinks, oranges, etc., in which shades can be introduced, true white or black will sort of be the end of the road for that solid color. We could get bigger, more frilly, or something else, but white is white. Now, those different colored edges or eyes or patterns WOULD open up many possibilities! Maybe someone here knows why it is so difficult (near impossible) to come up with true white (or black) daylilies.
What WILL be the next big breakthrough in daylilies? The $64,000 question.

Avedon, I agree with you, and I think the next one is going to be a true blue, if it's even possible. Seems like so many people are working toward that goal, which is great! Of course, it would be awesome if I was the one who made that breakthrough, but that means that I'd have to work toward that goal. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Ya, right! I'm just hoping to get a bloom that isn't totally ugly, no matter what color it is! Actually, it was a daylily with blue in the name that got me started hybridizing. I think I'll start a new thread on that topic. I just hope that a blue one shows up in my lifetime, because I'd really love to see that!

Hector, I had heard a long time ago that white was a great color to use when trying to clear up colors. Have you found that to be true? Maybe you haven't worked with a lot of colors though, so it may be a question that someone else will have to answer. I'm really curious because I'm got a decent red seedling, but I think the color is a little muddy looking. I'm going to try crossing it with one that I have that is considered white (Sunday Gloves), and hope for a better color. Or, maybe it would just be a waste of time? I'm limited on space, so I'm not sure it would even be worth trying.
