Thanks Lorn I am counting on 5 or 6 feet by the second year. That is a fantastic bunch. My Altaries grow like that and are very fragrant.

That does it, I'm getting one!! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Green Grin! I use Loppers on woody stalks up to 1 1/4 inch wide, works good. Some people call them 'Root Cutters' but to me it is just a pruner, whether stalks or roots it all gets pruned.

Oh yeah, you definitely can't use your standard hand pruners on these stems. Silk Road has been a favorite for many years, for good reason.

Critter ~ I know you're not fond of pink, but I threw Silk Road in there because the color is so deep you can hardly call it pink. And the white is sooo white. Thumbs up
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

[quote="ge1836"]I just planted Friso last fall. Its supposed to be the same as Silk Road. I bought the bulbs because it was listed as a taller lily.
Lets hope.

I've had Friso now for at least 5 years and the last two years it has reached just shy of 9 feet tall. It hasn't been a fast multiplier for me but the height, number of blooms and for those interested, it is fertile.

This photo is from 2011
This photo is from 2012. As you can see from all the spent flowers there are a lot of them. The fence in the background is 6 feet.
Thumb of 2013-12-21/bearsearch/7c7276 This photo is also 2012. You can see the height against the fence better. These aren't the best photos I have but I can't seem to find the others at the moment.

Does anyone have one?
What do you think of it?

Hi, I got these bulbs and they are over 5 ft tall, but as all the photos illustrate, it is a dark maroon. The smell is amazing and I like them for what they are. Not delighted that they are not purple.

I sent a photo if this lily and the the daylillies, purple de oro (bloomed burgandy) and pandoras box (supposed to be white but was bright yellow) to Brecks. They issued a refund.

I started this thread because I was afraid to shell out money for one, fearing it would bee too pale for my liking.
TELL ME MORE about your experience with Breck's!

I wont use Brecks
reallllly bad rateing

The tree lable on tall lilies doesnt mean anything. Many tall varieties have had that tag. My lilies over 6 feet the first couple of years have settled into a 4- 5 foot mode.

I tried Purple Prince twice and found it not dark enough as pictured. I like what I have but wont trust a photo anymore.
Even The Lilly Garden has a dark purple lily in a photo that has been "shopped" to darken the color.

OK I am sitting on the other side of the fence here...........lol
I have 29 of these purple prince blooming at the back of my garden.........
I fell for the lily tree thing last year too but am NOW much smarter and lone
behold all my mine are purple purple........
they are all first year bulbs from Brecks and the rest of their lilies are not doing what the purple prince this year has done
they are all very tall and very thick stemmed and all have quite a few flowers...

Purple Prince wasn't shown as a "tree lily" by Dutch Gardens, when I bought it in 2009. It did get to 6' but then the deer found it growing and kept eating the buds so I moved it (last fall) to a garden protected with deer fencing and it has bloomed beautifully. It's not purple to me - not like the "royal purple", but more a pink to magenta. This year it's around 3.5' tall but by next year should be back to 6' tall, though the label says the height is 3 - 4'.

Alas, those don't look PURPLE purple to me, they look pink.
But I have a decades longstanding difficulty with pink.
They're fine for others, but not as purple as I would want them to be for me.

Ironically I have a Midnight trumpet that is like a purple tinged white and a Summer Palace that is supposed to be pink was dark purple! Here's the pic of my "pink" Summer Palace.
