There are a lot of terms that were formerly common in conversation that are today recognized as derogatory, and more than a few of them were used in reference to plant common names. Many had to do with ethnicity and race. I think
BigBill has lived enough years in the United States to know what they are without me being explicit. Just because one grew up with it (or was taught it) doesn't mean one should keep doing it - blindly or not. When positive new information is presented - rather than arbitrary - embrace it.
Scots versus Scotch is one of those terms, and it is probably far more readily recognized as such in the UK. There's not a lot of value in continuing to use an improper name.
