I just purchased several colors of coneflowers. If they produced seed, has anyone grew them from their plant? Red, Yellow and White. I have had pink and purple in my yard for years but have never tried planting the seed head.

I don't have any fancy ones.. but the regular ones self seed for me

Most of the colored ones, hybrids, will most likely not come true from seed. They're just as likely to produce regular purple coneflowers.

My 'White Swan's will come true from seeds. I have a NOID bright pink that also comes true but my 'Ruby Star' produced the regular purple echinaceas from it's seeds!
Do they divide hybrids to get new plants??? When is the best time to take divisions?

I am new to this forum simply because i have never had a plant to grow for me from seeds,remind you i said for me!!It's not from lack of trying,last year i had bunches of little plants come up and then grow so tall & lanky fall over & die.This is probably because i had no idea what i was doing.If i can put the seeds straight outside on the ground and they will grow i'm good.Being partially handicapped from MS,being able to sow the seeds outside in the bed i want them in is much easier.

To the point, i guess a bird had been eating from coneflowers and was flying over my ditch when it done it's business.There is 2 flowers that came up. I cut the top off of one when it dried out.Now waiting for the other to dry out but after i have them both cut off how can or what do i need to do to sow the seeds in the flower in a flower bed?How do i get to the seeds or anyone know a link that will help me with this??

Jojoe, limited by MS myself and I would also be interested in Echinacea seed sowing directly outsid. Do you have that Georgia clay soil?

luckily no i'm not on a lot of Ga. red clay.Also thanks a lot for the links!! I am going to try sowing the 4 o'clock seeds as if i were the original plant this year.

I also dug up about 5 plants I have them in a pot and i guess i need to get them in the ground,i'm hoping they will come back next year.Do they come back from the roots and then reseed also?

I don't work but i have been making a rock garden and i bought some upright sedum,I plan on planting tomorrow i hope if everything goes my way.

By coneflower, I'm guessing you mean echinacea. Let the blossom remain on the plant until seeds mature. Seeds are embedded in the cone. That's when the flower is brown, dry, and dead looking. Cut off the seed head, hold it upside down, and run your finger firmly over the cone. (can feel sharp, you might want to wear gloves). Seeds should fall right out.

To move them in fall, as with your potted plants, some experts suggest giving echinacea time (6 to 8 weeks) to establish before the first hard freeze. I'd get those planted asap.
