Every daylily I have except the sales plants and seedlings are in raised beds. The sales plants are in pots and the seedlings are in the ground. The new box I just completed in the display area will have three gallon pots in it. After the Regional next year they will be removed, divided, and repotted for the sales area because they will all be 2011,12, and 2013 daylilies. The rest of the boxes have the pine bark mix in them.

The bottom of the box is the same as the sides, treated 2X10X8 foot long. Plywood or decking board will not last long enough. The box is on treated 4X4s four foot apart.
This is a 60X4' box. A 20x4' box cost about $300 for lumber and screws from Lowes.

Fred is there a reason you have the seedlings in the ground or was that just a space constraint this season?

Thanks Fred. Good to know. Having them raised should help with weeding too!

The long box will hold 240 if you space them 12" apart, or 800 baby seedlings, this is the only box I plant seedlings in. The reason the seedlings are in the ground is I want them to survive an grow just like they will be grown when they leave here, also daylilies do better in the ground than any man made container. If it wasn't for tree roots all of mine would be in the ground, not to mention the expense.

O dear, mine are too close. They bloom tho. Live and learn, there is always next year. Love the boxes for the seedlings, It would sure make things easier. I really like having the bottom, not just the boxed sides like I have.

Pam, I can't remember which hybridizer it is, but there is one that plants them about 3" apart. I would think they would really grow into each other being that close, but if it works for them I guess it's ok. I know my seedlings that I had planted last fall were about 8" apart.

I think Bob Carr planted his 3" apart in row's 18" apart. It really makes no difference how far apart you plant seedlings. If you have 1000 planted your only going to keep about a dozen of them at the most, so when you dig out the few keepers you don't worry about damaging the ones around them, your going to destroy them anyway.

I don't keep many seedlings either. Hubby would keep them all, but I win.
Don't want more than we can handle. I'm ruthless when it comes to culling
now. Freaked me out when we had around 4000 out there.

You can round-up the rejects and then cover the rows for a few weeks. Presto! You have good nutrients to put back into the soil for the next generation.
