Oh, WOW! Those are gorgeous! Dancing on Ice is soooo white and so pretty. Of all the white ones you grow, what are your top 3 favorites, Dot? Wish I can see them in person, all these beautiful white flowers. Thank You! for sharing them.

Karen, Royal Frosting also seems to have better substance and possibly better branching/bud count than Gentle Shepherd. Smiling

My three favorite white would be:
1. Irish Halo, 2. Snow Crystal and 3. Voila Francois. Voila Francois makes a huge clump for me.

Keeping in mind that sunlight and cameras can change coloring from what the naked eye sees, here are some of the near-whites in my garden that I took pictures of as well as a bunch that are in a local daylily garden:

Joan Senior
Thumb of 2016-01-03/DogsNDaylilies/d88cf5
(she normally looks whiter than this.)

Lyonness

(this one is fairly white, but is more of a creamy white with peachy undertones....again, not the best picture for color accuracy)
Here's another picture of it:
Thumb of 2016-01-03/DogsNDaylilies/8e27bf

Royal Frosting

(this one is normally VERY white and sparkly...and boy does she smell divine!)

Peggy Jeffcoat
Thumb of 2016-01-03/DogsNDaylilies/377f17
without looking it up, I think Peggy Jeffcoat is considered a near-white, but she's more of a rosy-white or even peach-white...definitely not a clear white.

...I'm not sure if this one is considered near-white or yellow. It's a light yellow, but it helps give color contrast for the other blooms on here, too, if it is considered a near-white.

Thank you all. I have been feasting on your lovely pics. When I started growing daylilies 3 years back, I was most keen to get whites and clear reds, purples and pinks. Since then I've fallen in love with all colours. I wish we could buy here in Aus. some of the ones you have shown.

The whitest I have is JUST CELEBRATE.

Almost certain this is KNIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN. It looks lots like some of the pics on the ATP site but not like a couple of pics which appear to not have a gold edge, and which have little substance. I thought I may have lost mine. So am happy about it. The 3.0 rust score is consistent with mine. Not bad given its parentage from DRUID'S CHANT with 4.5 and BIG BLUE with 4.0
It is a little bit lighter than pic shows. Will check to see if lighter this evening after a 90 deg day here.

The description in the database says "cream white with gold edge and green throat". I often look at the pics and try to find the one that best matches the "description" by the hybridizer, because I feel that is what the plant was supposed to look like, but the blooms often appear pretty different out in other people's gardens.

After hearing how near whites can clean up muddy colors, and add brightness, I decided to add a few last year. I got Boundless Beauty, Lime Frost, Michael Miller, Mississippi Memories, and Voila Francois. I am hopeful that they all make it through their first winter here, and bloom next year. I would welcome any advice on how to use near whites in hybridizing, always trying to learn more. After reading an article from Mick Morry, I am also going to try and use the few oranges I have to try and add some brightness to a few seedlings, also.

August Frost is one of my favorites, its inexpensive, blooms late, blooms alot for a long time and has perfect blooms for me. Diamond dusted and nice substance. thick scapes that hold up well and increases quickly.
Joan Senior was a heavy bloomer for me and forms a clump quickly, almost too quickly -if you are one who can't stand yesterdays blooms hanging on and like to dead head-this one will drive you crazy, because it blooms so much at once that it is a real job to keep deadheaded. It was pretty white for me, not too yellowish.

Might anyone have a photograph of the diploid 'Gentle Shepherd' next to the tetraploid conversion that they could post?

Is this thread really over 4 years old?

It still seems to me that the dips are somewhat more white than the tets, but I love the tets for their larger, more ruffled blooms. (On the downside, though, the tets also appear to be more prone to rust. Glare ) But even the soft coloration of the near-white tets works well in a white-themed (or Moon) garden.

Depending on what you view as "near-white", my current "stable" of near-white daylilies:

The Diploids

'Clarity of Purpose' is by far the clearest and whitest of these. 'Give Me Eight' normally does not look that yellow here. That image was taken on a rare, more humid day. 'May May' was just reacquired last year, but I mixed up some labels, so I have to wait for things to bloom to sort them out. Rolling my eyes. Finally, yesterday a box arrived from Oakes Daylilies, which (among other things) has the unregistered "Miss Amelia", which is supposedly near-white, at least from a distance. https://www.oakesdaylilies.com...

The Tetraploids

'Arctic Lace' has beautiful flowers, but it has sulked ever since I transplanted it a few years ago. 'Ballerina on Ice' is valuable for its early/early midseason bloom. 'December Wedding' is my current favorite of the tets; the blooms are beautiful and the plant appears to maybe have some rust resistance. The form on 'Snow Maiden' is not to my taste, and the substance is thin, but I'll give it another year. 'White Wolf' is beautiful, but it is prone to rust. 'Winter Wedding' is maybe the whitest of these, but it has some foliar disease problems and the bud count is not great. 'Wonder of It All' has some opening problems here, and the plant is prone to rust.

I have yet to see bloom on 'Arctic Elegance' (which thus far seems to have some rust resistance), 'Grand Pacific', 'Hazel Ballard', and 'White Perfection'. If anyone has reports on these, especially wrt rust, I'd appreciate it.

The Seedlings (Tets)

Thumb of 2017-04-08/Polymerous/6ea352 Thumb of 2017-04-08/Polymerous/474453

Yes, I know, more cream than white... the first one is an older seedling, which stays because it always opens well here. The second one had maiden bloom last season; I am anxiously looking for a scape this season.
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom
