Hi Everyone!!

My first order arrived in the mail and I am so thrilled with what I got from Earlybird Daylilies!! It is a huge order and I got Elizabeth Salter as a bonus plant!! I almost fell over!!!

Couple of questions!

What to do with them until I can plant??
There are way more than I thought I was getting...she is very generous I will say that!!!

They look wonderful!! Although to be honest I have never seen a naked daylily before!

Um...I have a large box of sphagnum moss that is just sitting here for top dressings...it is the only thing I can rig up to hold them til the weekend when I can plant!!
Is this a good plan?? To wet the moss and set them in there...I can get them all in and cover the roots but I'm worried if the don't like sphagnum or if I get it too wet or well, what else could go wrong with this plan??

What do you guys do when the baby arrives before the cradle is ready???

Please share!!

Also, I am such an excited newbie...that I want to share with you all what I got!!
Can I put pictures from other sites or Robin's site to show you my order?? is that legal? Or will it bore you all to tears? I am so thrilled right now!!!!

I gotta go to home depot and get more pine bark and make the beds ready by the weekend...but for tonight...I'm one happy new Mama!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for your help!!

What most people do is put them in a container with water, just enough to cover the roots and not the crown, and let them soak until you are ready to plant.

What Tink said. Mine have been soaking since Sunday afternoon Blinking but the new bed is almost done. Don't worry if the outer foliage goes yellow. And were you going to give us pictures? We want to see your windfall! Thumbs up

Thanks so much for the information! They are soaking now...I guess they will be until the weekend...um..I better go check if the crown is covered or not...I wasn't that precise....the mosquitoes ran me outta there pretty quick!

I can't take pictures of my score....I was just going to show you guys the lily flower pictures I chose from Robin's site. I don't have the tech know how for the picture thing on here of my own stuff...but I will learn before they bloom so I can show you my "babies' in bloom!

I wanted to post my lily pics from Robin's site to the Peach thread because everything I got was peach except for two pink...that's ok right? Long as I say it is Earlybird Daylilies Pics??

So they will be fine until the weekend...soaking right?
I'm so relieved!

Hey Daylily...I have just enough enthusiasm to be dangerous! To the daylilies and the bank account!

Thanks all!

pictures are easy here. You just have to know where it is on your computer. At the bottom of every reply screen are 3 green buttons - one says "upload an image." You click that button, find the picture on your PC, and select it. Easy peasy. Thumbs up

It is known as enabling, and yes, we would love to see a photo of your score. Big Grin if no photo, list your daylilies, we love to drool.

By the way, it took me a week to plant my order from Maryott's. Yeah, they yellowed, but they should be just fine in a few weeks. I will water daily for a week, the taper off. They will be mulched well for winter.

Now I only need to get another dozen potted daylilies planted before cold weather sticks around. Getting there!

I soak all daylilies before planting. A week? Well, to be honest, I have been known to soak them for a month! Just changing the water.

Soaking after shipping when the roots get dried out is a very good idea.

I will also suggest flooding them with water - a bucket on each plant, when you first plant, up to 2 weeks to start those little white NEW roots growing. Those are the ones that will hunker the daylily down in YOUR garden.

That info is given to all who purchase daylilies from me from the garden or special sales.

Soak

Heavily water for 2 wks

Water normally after that.

Enjoy your new daylilies!

If you check the Forum, you will see my post saying the J. Davisson daylilies arrived. They are soaking in water and will stay there until they are planted this evening when the temp goes down. We have not been lucky with our weather, still unseasonably warm, so we wait until the sun is pretty much down before the plants go into the ground. We are supposed to have some cloud cover and possibly rain by Saturday evening, sure hope so, we need it. If by some chance it remains on the hot side, my husband will rig up a shade cloth to protect the new plants. Of course we only have a few so that is not a problem for us, will be difficult if you have many DLs and I think you have, but maybe you have cooler weather. And yes, the new plants will get lots of water either by the sky or by us. Really happy for you with the first order, know it will be the first of many---enjoy!!! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Green Grin! and Avedon (I think) posted a pic of her new DLs soaking, so you can get an idea of how to put them in water while you wait to plant them.

Fiwit-- I loved the pic of Spanish Glow and if it is even half as pretty as the pic, I will be thrilled! And yes, I just saw the pic of daylilies soaking...that is what mine look like too!

NewyorkRita--Sshh don't tell anyone...but I think I got double what I ordered plus bonus plants! OMG!! What a good deal. I'm ordering again in the Spring. I have my eye on Swiss Mint. You see? You guys were right! It's a white...not peach! haha!

And you are right that I did good...and I couldn't have done it without Ann's recommendation!

Jan...
Ain't she pretty?
If she does good here...you can have a fan...because you are my first "fan"!! :)

And a newbie question--

One of the root nodules broke off. I can't bear to throw it away...can it be planted all by it's little broken necked self? And will it produce a plant? I guess I'd stick the tip top just at the surface...there is no fan...jus a lil piece of root. Anybody ever do this? I'm gonna experiment...rather than throw it away. Rolling on the floor laughing
