Looking for Magic: Basil

By Sharon
October 1, 2012

Aunt Bett always said, "Look for the magic that hides in plants, look real close and you'll find it." Most of the time we don't have to look very far; most of the time we can find magic in our own herb gardens.

Strawberries allowed to macerate with a bit of honey and basil. Lovey dubby

Somehow this combination should not work, but it does, and I love it.

Thanks for these great articles, Sharon.

Hurray! I tip my hat to you. Hurray! I tip my hat to you.

Never heard of that, Marilyn, but it sure sounds good.

It's gotta be strawberry season somewhere. Surely I can find them.

Thanks, Vicki.
Sorry you missed out on it this year. I thought I had lost mine too, but surprisingly it popped right back up when we finally got a little rain.

Wow, Sharon. Never knew that much about basil, which I love. Thanks for another wonderful article. I always look forward to our Italian daughter-in-law's large platter of sliced home-grown tomatoes, mozzarella and basil drizzled with olive oil when we visit them in the summer. Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

Marilyn, I'm sure going to try the strawberries with basil and honey when we get back tp FL, where I have basil growing. My basil died in the heat this summer. Sad Sad Sad

My basil is still growing but because the weather is turning, with lows in the 30s this week, I am afraid I need to harvest it. I will try to freeze or use the preserving in oil method for some.

I usually just dry it. I don't grow much but love to use the fresh herbs in my omelets.

The same chef who made the salad for me also roasted garlic until it was smushy butter. You simply spread it on the bread. Delicious.

I'm starving and don't have a tomato left. Sad

I had to go check the basil. It is beautiful, I think I can still get tomatoes at the farmers market,

You have inspired me again.

Sweet basil! I love it.
Mine's getting a little ratty. The picture of mine in the article was taken a couple weeks ago, not quite as spiffy looking now.

Great article. I always grow basil in the summer. I can't resist the smell of thai basil, but somehow never get around to cooking with it . I guess I imagine that I like to cook but in reality don't!
