Alfalfa pellets make a great slow release fertilizer that also adds texture to the soil.

Top dressing... better to do in spring, or in fall so the worms can work it into the soil?

I tend to do it in spring, but I think it is because it is easier to sprinkle it around then. After that, the foliage is to dense in the beds.

I did use it a little heavy one fall when making a new bed. A gardening friend came to help me replant. She said she does not use it in the fall because it heats up the soil as it decomposes.

Thankfully, the daylilies did just fine!

OK, thanks! I suppose it would also just provide forage for bunnies and voles over winter. And I have enough of them already, don't need to encourage more to move in!

We have a local mill that sells animal feeds. I buy it there, in 50 pound bags. I get alfalfa that is packaged for rabbits.

Are there any farm stores in your that cater to those who raise horses, cattle, poultry? They would have it. Also large chain pet stores could have it. Be certain it is just alfalfa....no additives.

Oh, ok! There is a feed and seed up the street but they don't carry any. I will try the pet stores. I tip my hat to you.

I live out in the country. We have LOTS of rabbits. I have never seen a rabbit come in to the beds to eat the alfalfa pellets.

I wonder if, in town, they have less food, less habitat - maybe the would eat the pellets then?

Good question! I found this on line store that has it but I haven't found out the postage. They want me to go through the whole rigamarole of giving them my personal information and it just ain't happening right now. Whistling
However, they also have the Chicken Manure and Compost Tea. Green Grin!

Do you have a Tractor Supply, or a Quality Farm and Fleet near you? They would be worth checking to see what they have.

I found a TS in Smithfield, not too far away. They have pure Alfalfa Pellets in a 40 lb. bag for 10.50. They also have a blend but I did not ask about that. She did not know you could put it around flowers.
I have never been to a TS, it will be fun to look around there.

Susan,

We get our alfalfa pellet bags (Kaytee brand) for our bunnies at our local Target. Check in the pet section for it. If you don't see the bags, ask someone who works there (and when the shipment will be in). When I see it, I get two bags at a time, so I don't run out for our bunnies.

Ok, thanks they must have been out but there is a tractor supply that has a 40lb bag for 10.50 and it is 100% alfalfa. What is the price on the Kaytee and what is the percentage?

Susan,

I don't remember what the price per bag is, but the Kaytee bags are 8 lbs in the pet secton at Target.

I didn't know TS had alfalfa pellets, but since our two bunnies are spoiled rotten, they would turn their noses up and not eat the TS stuff. They're very picky about everything for the past ten and a half years! Hilarious!

Marilyn, they had two kinds and I got the pure. It is 10.50 for 40 lbs. I am sure it doesn't taste good but it is just for the plants so I just buy cheap. Thumbs up

I may be mistaken but I've been told that the rabbit pellets contain salt & that the pure alfalfa pellets are best for the daylilies.
