Just a wild guess but to my eyes it looks like a juvenile Monstera deliciosa: Split-Leaf Philodendron (Monstera deliciosa) They don't get the splits in their leaves until they begin to mature.
thanks for the suggestion. unfortunately that wasnt it. this plant is very mature. at least 3 1/2 feet wide. the leaves are bigger than my hand. the steams are like that of a Philodendron. i thought it was so type of mutated philodendron. thats what it looks, but huge. the petals are shaped like hearts.

There are hundreds of Philodendrons. Does that pot have a drain hole? Neither size nor age necessarily affect maturity in regard to leaf shape. One can have a plant for decades that does not make mature leaf forms, for various reasons.
