Make Dividing Daylilies Easier with a Strong Water Spray

By daylily
October 14, 2012

After wrestling daylilies out of the ground, try squirting the roots all over with a strong spray of water to make dividing easier.

I learned this from the daylily forum here last spring, and used it when I was relocating and giving away clumps of daffodils, as well as when dividing some daylily clumps I'd been given by friends. I only occasionally had to resort to a knife - water is very powerful. Thumbs up

Yes, wonderful tip. One that I will use too. Now, if I can find one of those nozzles.

Ah, it's at Lowes. I'll go soon to see if they have one in stock. Thanks for the tip.
All the nozzles we have are breaking apart.

I agree nodding Thumbs up

Hopefully, it's at my local Lowe's!

Any idea of the price for it? I hope it isn't too much at Lowe's.

I just use the "jet" setting on my spray nozzle for something like that, but that one looks really snazzy. But the hardest part for me is digging it up and getting it out of the hole. I can't believe how much some of those clumps weigh!

I ordered my nozzle online, I think right from the company. It has been a few years ago, and I don't recall the price. I have never seen one at Lowes.

There is one thing I don't like about this nozzle, it does not have instant shut off. You have to twist it.

But the spray it puts out is great!

I was wondering how I was going to divide some of my daylilies and this method sounds like it would work great. We have some maple trees that have roots growing into my flower bed and I know there are roots mixed in with my dl's. If I can soak it very good, dig around it and try to get the clump out, then I will use the force hose on it to try to separate the roots. Glad you posted this. Thanks!

I checked the Lowes website - while they have a couple Bon-Aire products, this nozzle isn't one of them.

I was talking to the folks who said it was sold at Lowes -- they said that cause when you go to the company website (the link you posted) and click "where can I buy" - it lists Lowes as an option (and Costco).

That's what I did too. Used the link to their website and clicked 'where to buy'. It
also lists Kmart. We may have to look around, or maybe one of the stores will order it.
I have been wanting a heavy duty nozzle for some time. These cheapies are not so
cheap in cost, just cheaply made. Crying

Oh, ok.

Maybe try Amazon.... Shrug!

I think this one would be considered commercial quality.

Julie, I was referring to the 'cheapies' that I have now. Yours looks
like commercial quality, so I will look for that one. I re-read my post, and
didn't think it sounded clearly stated.

it's ok, Shirlee --- I was just thinking that the people that shop for hose nozzles at Lowes, or Kmart would not usually buy this quality --- I can't remember how much I paid years ago. I think between $20-$30.

Let me go see if I can find it on Amazon....

Yep, here it is. The one I have is stainless. It sure looks like it is this one.

Marilyn... Mine is Stainless - it is heavy. Those are aluminum. Says same quality - but I don't know. The link I gave to Amazon has the stainless one. I think they also have the less expensive aluminum ones.

Juli,

Thanks! Have you had any problems with it over the years? I was reading some of the reviews on Amazon and some said it was breaking apart.
