I have a very out of control Blue Bird. Can I whack it back now and how much can I whack? The main stem is about 4 inches thick

If you prune it now there won't be any flowers come spring. I would wait to prune till after it flowers. As for how far, I've never seen a clematis with a stem that thick so I don't know how well a stem that old would take to severe pruning. Are there other stems besides that one?

The main stem "Y's" off with 2 thick stems and from there, a bunch of side branches. I took out a lot. I'll post some photos later this morning (when the sun's up)
