Dave my problem is that sometimes i find the Database common names listed alphabetically first, sometimes botanical names. I get stuck when i come across common names. Ipomea has 33 pages of listings, thirty three pages of common names. When i went looking after the above post, they were listed botanically.
Janet, it's a wild plant i did not find it in a domestic garden.
Any Fern detectives around? On Ferns, the plant ID forum is a bit weak.

From what I can find, the best way to tell the difference between I. indica and I purpurea is in the sepals. Based on your photo I am incline to agree with Janet, but it is difficult for me to say for sure without a closer shot.

Ipomoea purpurea should have short more acute sepals like the ones shown in this link.

Ipomoea indica should have longer, tapered sepals like the ones in this photo from my yard.

Now i am stuck. Your (photograph) plant i have seen in Sindh province, Karachi to be more exact. We used to eat the unripe seed pod(childhood). Sindh's climate is different equal to zone 11. Desert, hot, waterless, worse than Arid. Schindian belt from Africa, Iran(South), Sindh to about Punjab. As Sindh was a part of the Bombay Presidency then the Western Ghats to Hydrabad (Deccan) to Rajastan, Cholistan desert. Forget it, i am learning.
Most of the plants in this (current topic photograph) area have China at the end. (Chininensis) China is huge from Himalayas to Mongolia to Pacific to Russia. Indica is also huge, from Afghanistan, Iran to Himalayas to Thailand to Sri Lanka. Different terrain, different eco-systems. The names do no justice to Himalayan plants. I cannot argue so a close up is required but you are 100% correct according to what i can recollect. Ok! please shift the photograph.
Our data base(Pakistan's) is no good, plants and nature not a priority. British text books are outdated and as i am a student of the Materia Medica the plants never changed their names to keep confusion away. So, when i go looking on the net then i find out that the plant has shifted from here to there and from there, that's another tale.
Not a Botany student my detective work is slipshod and i have to improve it. Sorry.

We all have trouble keeping up with the botanists, Masud. Use the names you find in your reference materials and we'll move them if we find that they're now synonyms of other names.

Moving on to your other problem:

Common names are never listed in alphabetical order in the database. Cultivar names are listed alphabetically, but they're preceded by an alphabetical list of the species and subspecies. I suspect you had a problem because you didn't ask to see all of the plants in the genus. If you type Ipomoea into the search space, you'll arrive at a page listing all of the Ipomoeas in order of popularity (I think).

When you get to that page, you must click on the line asking whether you want to view all the plants in the genus. After you click on that line, you'll arrive at this page. This is where you would want to be, I suspect:

The species are listed alphabetically on the first few pages. If you're looking for a particular cultivar, use the letters at the top to arrive at those pages. If you're on one of the letter pages and you want to go back to the species pages, clicking on zero (the "0" following "Z") will take you back to the first page.
