As a comment about Garden Peony (Paeonia 'Illini Warrior'), frankrichards16 wrote:

Paeonia 'Illini Warrior', (2-SL-R) herbaceous Hybrid Peony, (Glasscock -Falk, 1955), USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Tall, single, brilliant red petals, cupped, golden stamen boss, red mottled stems, fragrant, early bloomer, Michigan Bloom Month 5b.

Bred by Lyman D. Glasscock (1875-1972) Elmwood, Illinois. Parentage unknown. Elmwood is not far from the "Fighting Illini" athletic teams of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, thus the name of this hybrid. This is one of the tallest peonies that I own and even with good support, I have occasional wind damage.

This peony was sold to me as "Charles Burgess"...definitely NOT a japanese form. Is a mislabelled peony forever "unknown" or is there any way to tell if it is Illini Warrior?
