Were those trees on the approved annexation area? Maybe you can take pictures of the trees now and show the city counsel what a mess they made.. perhaps they can compensate you (but how can you be compensated for years of toil?). Was this on public land or on your private property? And if it's on your private property, did they have a lien to do this destruction?

Did they give any kind of warning? They could have made it easier for themselves. You would probably have moved the bridge and saved some plants.

It's amazing the amount of damage public works can do for your benefit.

PPal - but it's not really to her benefit.. she didn't ask to be hooked up to public water.

Usually, there is an official easement covering X number of feet from the roadway. This is for public utilities and/or future expansion of the road. You will find the power company poles are set on the easement line. Any private use of that easement area is subject to the will of the local government.

I should have said "benefit". Our fences have been ruined by the road crews "improving" the ditches for example. Most annoying as there is nothing we can do about it.
