What's Blooming in October

By LarryR
October 26, 2012

Although our gardens are still officially beset by this year's drought, and we're still about eight inches shy of our average annual rainfall, we've been blessed with some pretty generous rains lately. And despite numerous frosty nights, our gardens are not yet bereft of blossoms. Come on in, see what's blooming, and check out the winner of last month's What's Blooming contest.

That is such a stunning Dahlia.

The daylily is also gorgeous, as are all of the other photos. I couldn't begin to guess what the name of the mystery daylily is. Sticking tongue out

Thanks much for starting the thread, Lynn. I've been preoccupied with the impending death of my beloved Afghan Hound, Saphira, making sure that she's comfortable and comforted.

I'm so sorry to learn Saphira. I'll keep you and Wilma in my thoughts, and hope Saphira goes peacefully.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Thanks for those comforting words, Moby and Lynn.

Moby, great to see you here! You're absolutely right about the cultivar, but you need to complete the rest of the requirements. Here are the instructions that appeared in the article:

"This photo appeared on the ATP website this month. In order to win, you must name not only the cultivar but must also describe where it appeared and the name of the person who posted it."

I think you may already know the answer. Hope to hear back from you shortly.

Larry, please allow me to post my condolences here on what you're currently going through with Saphira. As Lynn said, there are no words that can help, but know that our hearts are with you. Group hug

Got it ~ whew!
It was YOUR photo and Dave posted it in his article here http://garden.org/ideas/view/d... Green Grin!

PS. I knew the daylily right off as I have admired it in more than one Iowa garden. In fact, at this very moment I'm supposed to be driving to Des Moines for the Lily Symposium. But as luck would have it, I neglected to put my jeans in the dryer. Smiling Wish you could come, Larry ~ it's at the library in Waukee with speakers starting at 10:00.

Hooray, Moby!!! I was holding my breath... Thumbs up One good thing about those jeans: Bet they were nice and warm when you put them on. Smiling Would have loved to be at the symposium.

Thank you all so much for your kind words about Saphira. She passed away yesterday.

Yes, afghans are like that. I had a lovely blue brindle many years ago. They are special dogs, indeed! Take care, Larry.

Thanks for the compliment, Lynn and Tee. I've been bitten by the daylily bug. Green Grin! All my free time in recent months has been taken up by daylily research, ordering, planting, hybridizing, and shipping. There are over 70,000 daylily cultivars listed in the AHS database, so there is LOTS of research to do. Once I feel like I've got a handle on things, I'll start writing again. Best--Larry
