Here's the equivalents for the temperatures that I mentioned

-39.5ºC = -39.1ºF
-30ºC = -22ºF
-20ºC = -4ºF
-8ºC = +17ºF
-5ºC = +23ºF
-2ºC = +28.4ºF
+5ºC = +41ºF

I can attest to that! When we get snow, I make sure that I shovel it from the driveway onto the yard. The deeper the snow, the happier I get because it's free water! Same with my walkway.. I shovel that onto my miniature roses bed. The deeper snow protects the canes from winterkill.

Excellent reminder of how well snow insulates our plants.

Do you get a lot of Chinooks in your area? We have huge temperature fluctuations here and often loose our snow cover with Chinooks.

Ice is not an insulator, but certainly can be pretty.

Joanna - We get the Chinooks in the early/mid spring. Luckily by that time, we're already so tired of winter, we welcome them. They come roaring off the mountains, cutting the snow off the mountains so the wind here is butt-kicking cold even though it's a warm windfront. Stings like the dickens 'cuz it always carries ice particles from the mountains and that hurts! As of the past few years, we haven't had that many huge fluctuations in temperatures where it goes from 80+deg F to -17degF (like in '06), but we did have a huge drop last week where it was 77degsF on Tues and 21degsF on Wed w/snow.

Wonderful information Joanne. I know lots of people in snow areas that even shovel the snow onto their flower beds when clearing walkways and driveways.
