Snowing. Yuck, yuck, yuck. The 11 PM News updated our expected totals from 3-5 inches to 5-8 inches instead. And LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) power outtage numbers are increasing this afternoon and evening again instead of going down as we all want them too. Already lots of new outtages. They just showed one family in a local town on the news that got their power back this afternoon and lost power again 4 hours later in a new outtage.

The good news is that after tomorrow the weather is supposed to get much warmer and these snows will not last.

So I am going to shut off the computer and go to bed and hope we do not loose power overnight.

Rita - You can send me the snow! I'll take it! Really! Horrible about the power outtage, but that's what books are for. I just hope that there's no fires. I remember living in NNY and there'd be a lot of fires in the winter from people using space heaters wrong or candles being knocked over...

So I am sitting here looking out the window at snow. But it is getting to about 43 today so melting snow and tomorrow about 53 so it really should melt. I think about 3 inches here so really not bad. A teenage kid came around early this morning (8AM) asking if I need shoveling so I paid him $20 to shovel the driveway and my front from the porch to the street. So I am good.

Southern NJ had 13 inches of snow, CT, 11 inches, out on Long Island in Suffolk county about 8 inches. Lots of new power outtages all around in NJ, Staten Island, NYC and Long Island.

Apparenty Nassau County (us) again got the most new power outtages. Put this on top of all those people that are sitting in ice cold dark homes with no power still from last Monday.

My calendar says it's November, and the deer are definitely acting like it's November, but Holy Cow it is 80 degrees outside. The roses are still growing and blooming, and I'm still planting the last of my ridiculous clearance purchases.
When I ordered from Palatine, i requested delivery the week of November 19. If they send me bare-root, dormant roses, will they stay dormant, or will they try to leaf out? If we have cooled off by then, I shouldn't have an issue, but if this warm weather continues, should I keep the roses in the garage where it is slightly cooler and darker?
Since the soil temp is still 58 degrees, should i wait until it cools off?
I have not planted all my new bulbs, either.
Our rainfall is 6" down for the year, and we're still watering. it doesn't help that the wind is a constant 30 mph and is supposed to get worse tomorrow.
We hired a guy to paint our big ugly barn and he showed up alone today. He's up on a ladder, spraying paint in this wind. I usually ask subs if they have insurance before i hire them, but I forgot on this guy. That may have been a bad decision.
Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes. Crying

Cindi - I'm in the same boat as you. 70s here (almost unheard of for November), nights are cool, but I was just out wandering around this afternoon. My Day Breaker just bloomed AGAIN! WTH! This weekend we're supposed to get cooler weather, but I'm not holding my breath. I also am having roses coming in the week of the 19th, but I'm going to just bury them outside & mulch them 100%. That way, they don't get any sun, so they stay in dormancy until next spring. That's what I did when I got some roses in from England (Summer Holiday & Doris Tystermann) and it worked great. Our moisture levels are the lowest in like decades.. there's a large pond/small lake near my work that's almost 100% dry.. and I've never seen it empty in 11 years. It's horrible. If we don't get some snow tomorrow, I will have to water everything again. But thankfully I don't have the wind that you do! Too much pollution, yes, wind, no.

So...I had this brilliant idea of making TURKEY burritos today.
Trust me: It wasn't a brilliant idea at all.
(Like it never occurred to me that's why you never see Turkey listed on a Mexican menu !)

Zu: Did you cook a turkey for the cats ?

New generation of cats, new menu. Last year's turkey wasn't as popular as usual, so this year they got lots of tuna instead. They're all tuna addicts, but I don't think it's the best thing for them, so I rarely give it to them.

Hi Vicky! Glad to have you back. However I think a full report would be especially interesting under the current conditions!

None of our animals got a special Thanksgiving meal; I guess I'm a poor provider. Actually neither did we. It has been a busy week so we sort of skipped the holiday completely.

TURKEYS & GEESE:
Turkeys are the new thing around here.
I raised my first ever this year from hatching eggs.
I started out with 16 eggs and ended up with 4 live hatches.
Four females. No boys.
I've falling in love with turkeys! They are SO bright and people loving. They come running when they see me
and follow me around like a band of puppies.
I got way too attached to them which I typically don't do when I know they are destined for the freezer.
I sold two that will be used for breeding and I'm keeping tow.
I was going to get a tom but I pondered, do i really want to hatch out more turkeys that I don't want to eat?!
This Thanksgiving my girls are grateful we ate an anonymous frozen cousin from the grocery store but I
really would like to raise some for the freezer vs. buying mass production turkeys.
More and more I don't want to support that kind of commercial meat production.
I still have my geese but plan to cut back next summer after the breeding season because the cost of feed is getting ridiculous.

ROSES: I haven't purchased a single rose the last few years. Despite putting down Milky Spore 4 - 5 yrs. ago or so I still have
enough Japanese Beetles that pretty much ruin my annual rose crop. Plus I have Rose Chafers as well. Grumbling
It reduces me to tears every summer. Maybe I need to try Nematodes. This year I used Sevin as much as I don't like to during the peak Beetle season.
As for my roses I have probably already mentioned I've weeded out most of my smaller roses and what's left is the most care free roses such as Rugosas, Ramblers, a few Austins and some OGR. Albas have done especially well. Many of these roses are growing up through sod and weeds and only get one application of fertilizer in early June....typically Rose Tone by Epsoma. A lot of my roses are HUGE, HUGE, HUGE now! Its great having such grand, large shrub roses but painful to see my gorgeous blossoms devoured by those bastard Beetles.

OLD KITTY:
Very sadly we had to put down our 20 yr old cat 'Gremlin' about a month ago.
She was born here and was buried here. She will be greatly missed. Sad

ME: Quit my home health care job. Got burned out on the company I worked for.
Horrible managers and treated their employees like S.
Kind nice not working but not liking no money. Looking around for another job.
Good thing hubby works full time plus gets a pension. Big Grin
In general everything is doing well on my end and hope everybody around here is doing like-wise.

Here's some pics from this year.
