It was cold outside yesterday but I was outside much of the day hurrying as I wanted to finish my bulb planting. The forecast was for rain mixed with snow today. So far only rain but it is supposed to change over to the rain snow mix later. I really wanted to get those bulbs in.

Been working on them thru much of October and most of November. I can tell you I sure hope I don’t have to do this again as I hated having to work outside in November as it had already gotten cold.

To make it worse I had ordered over 4,000 bulbs by October and a few days later ordered from two more companies to make my bulb total 4,999 bulbs.

I ordered –
Tulips- 2,866
Crocus- 1,150
Daffodils- 588
Iris Reticulata- 200
Dutch Iris- 170
Hyacinths- 25

I got them from-
800 dutchgrown direct from holland
72 Brecks
187 American Meadows
825 Colorblends
660 Brent& Beckies
1,600 Van Engelen
210 bloomingbulb.com
645 Scheepers

4,999 Bulbs. I have to keep repeating that number as now I know WHY I am so darn stiff and sore for weeks now. I am glad it is yucky out today. I wasn’t going to go work out in the yard anyway.

I am so happy to be done!

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

That's a staggering amount! I can't imagine doing that much work in the garden in October and November. You are such a dedicated gardener, Rita. Hurray!

It really does look so beautiful when the massive amounts of bulbs start blooming in the spring.

I had hardly any crocus left as they mostly dissapeared thru my garden redos so I needed to get new ones planted. I need more so hopefully next fall but this is a good start. Of course the Daffodils do come back year after year and as I keep planting more daffs the daff shows just keep on getting better. But tulips just have a be constantly replaced and I do so love tulips. However, I did get into many new to me more perennial types of tulips this fall.

I don't think I did a very good job of immagineing how much work it would be to plant. If I did I wouldn't have ordered so many. I just kept thinking of how pretty they would be in bloom during the spring.

BTW those are pics of my English Lop buck Caramel, AKA "Mr. Personality" back in August. He's gotten much bigger now and is the most people loving breed of rabbit I have ever had! He about jumps into your arms when you open his cage door. Just adorable! Lovey dubby
I also have an English Lop doe Truffle but she is more aloof although does like being petted.

Not a lot of space needed. The bulbs mostly go between other plants.

Iris Reticulata is a new bulb for me. I have seen pictures of the flowers but never tried them before. Dutch Iris I love and usually plant some each fall. Then I needed crocus to replace all the crocus that just dissapeared here from all my years of redoing garden beds. I wanted to go really high on the crocus numbers, closer to 2,000 than 1,000 but I knew I just couldn't manage to deal with more bulbs that I have already ordered. So next fall I figgure I will be planting lots more crocus again.

Daffs are a staple, always have to add at least a few. But really, really went nuts on the tulips this year. I have planted my usual types of Darwins, Truimph and Late Tulips. But I also tried Emporer, Greigii, Kaufmanniana and species tulips for the first time. We will see what I think of them all next spring.

The species tulips should come back reliably year after year, so they're a good investment of your money, time, and effort.

The Emporer, Greigii, Kaufmanniana and species tulips all should come back and I have a fair amount of those catagories. I wanted to start adding tulips that I don't have to replant each year. But I can't resist the types that I do have to replant each year. I got lots and lots and lots of those beauties. I do love tulips.

I love tulips too. The grew well and came back every year in Massachusetts when I lived there. Here, however, they will rot if left in the ground and I don't really have the time to dig things up and replant yearly. I do miss all the lovely spring bulbs so I look forward to enjoying yours, Rita.

Rita: Did you order a semi rig full of bone meal to use on all those bulbs ?

Back to chickens for a moment. Having been born and raised in the city and not knowing anything about chickens, I have what is probably a really stupid question: Are you all saying that you can MAIL ORDER baby chicks and they get delivered in the mail or via UPS etc and they're actually ALIVE and in a box ???
I'd be ready to lay an egg too, if I were them, after going through that ordeal !
