Apple Blossom is beautiful, I love the way the blooms are covered in diamond dust that shines in the light.

In the sunshine.

Tall and lovely.

I have nothing against Apple Blossom, esp. since its one of the first cultivars that most people grow. It was my first Amaryllis, bought at Home Depot in 2004. Still going strong in my garden.

Thumb of 2013-01-20/bsharf/0951c3 Nyora from Royal Colors. A nice orange-red double. Seems to get more orange tones as it ages.

I like Apple Blossom, esp. since it is frequently the cultivar that introduces people to the world of Amaryllis. I bet that it, along with Red Lion, are the two most common cultivars found in the box store inventory. Apple Blossom was my first Amaryllis. purchased from Home Depot back in 2004. It still blooms every year out in my garden.

Yes, your right, it was Red Lion for me just last year, 1/2 price after Christmas at our local drugstore, I liked it so much I had to get a second one, a lovely white hybrid with just a number, no name, it has nice large blooms. That's the only colors they had. Hilarious!

I would like to get Candy Floss this fall if I can find it and can be shipped to Canada.

Pretty Aphrodite. The 3rd "first timer" Amaryllis, after Red Lion and Apple Blossom, is Minerva. Almost every "red and white" flowered Amaryllis bulb in local stores is Minerva. Several years ago, I bought a "red and white" bulb from Lowes, which turned out to be Gilmar, a really pretty red and white cultivar. I have never seen Gilmar for sale in the USA, so that was a very pleasant surprise.

I noticed that Aphrodite has no stamen and very little pollen on it's first bloom, it that typical? What year was Aphrodite introduced?

I do like Minerva, it is pretty.

Do you know of a supplier where I can order Candy Floss in the fall?

From Veronica Read's book Hippeastrum, Aphrodite was registered in 1994. It was bred by Miyake Nursery in Japan. Many of the doubles do not have normal reproductive parts, so what you are discribing is not uncommon. Candy Floss is a Hadeco (South African) cultivar. You should be able to get it in Canada, its not particularly rare. You need to google Canadian nurseries that sell Amaryllis.. Eden Blooms in California, might have it in the fall: They carry more Hadeco cultivars than I have ever seen anywhere else.. I think they still have Blushing Bride right now, which is very similar. I don't know which Ameriican nurseries will ship to Canada. Hadeco has a retail site but, as far as I know, only sells to England and Europe.

Thank you very much for all of the info.

I suppose in order to get certain cultivars when you live in cold areas such as mine you have to order late summer. Shrug!

I also love Aphrodite. One bud out of two opened yesterday. It is big, measures 9 inches across.

Margaret, yours has more pink coloration than mine. It's very pretty.

Lily your Aphrodite is still beautiful even though paler, the picotee edge stands out on mine more also. Maybe it has to do with the lighting and water differences, I give all of my plants a light feeding of Miracle-Gro every couple of weeks.
