Here in zone 5, in September, I found this in bloom in an overgrown garden.

What is it?

Using the plant ID forum and database at DG, I've determined it's Lycium chinense.

I'm glad you found it! I have Lycium barbarum and I kept thinking that bloom looked familiar. Duh.

I was thinking the same about Lycium carolinianum that grows around here.

Don't transplant it in your garden, even if you feel you like the flower (although I doubt... ) or you think of the miraculous effects of the fruit.
One you have it in your garden you will never get rid of it. Roots go deep deep deep.
It's a battle, really.
