Spitz, have you considered mounted some compact and sub-compact orchids there? Tillandsia and orchids make good companion plants in my opinion.

Going to stick with tillys for now. Some got sunburn in morning sun, but it looks minor so I won't move them. I'm hunting for a duratii now, and I just got word that the most complete collection in my country is very close to my house. Will post pics when I visit.

Seriously!!! You mounted them to concrete with sealant? What kind of sealant? That's a very good idea. I've got some hanging from the terrace ceiling in wicker baskets but mounting them to the columns on the terrace would be very cool. I'm waiting for the first big rain to arrive and then I will go out and collect the ones that have fallen from trees in the city, that's usually how I get them. I really like that look on the columns and I have 3 huge columns on my terrace, no direct sun but lots of light.

Used a silicone-based sealant, just to the side of the roots so I don't limit root growth, hoping the roots will eventually secure them onto the post. They get 2-3 hours morning sun and no direct rain. I love how they look fake, just glued on there.

Hilarious! Yes, and off the phone and electric lines as well. There are places out in the country where the lines are all completely covered with them. I think they remove them here in the city.

What is the largest species that grows wild there, and what is your climate like?

I see all 3 of the ones in your last post but I'm not up on the names. The climate is tropical with distinct wet and dry seasons, we have monsoon type rains almost daily starting in June until September, and very little rain the rest of the year. During the spring the temperatures go up and up along with the humidity until by June we are all very happy to see the beginning of the rainy season. That cools things off in the evenings and drops the humidity so that it is more pleasant to sleep in the summer than in the spring. I've never seen it get below 12°C (55°F) in the 8 years I've lived here. I've heard that it can get a little colder in some of the more rural areas but I haven't experienced it. That said, anything below 17°C (63°F) has me putting the electric blanket on the bed and getting out the wool socks. Our daily highs right now are over 40°C (104°F) and have been for over a month. It's hot, it isn't yet too humid so I still find it pretty comfortable. The lows are rising too though, it rarely gets below 25°C (77°F) at night now.

The wild tillandsia dry up in the dry season, they look dead and some of them don't come back. Once the rains start they either revive or they throw pups that grow and they take over wires and trees and fences. I tend to forget to water the ones at the house enough in the dry season, to stay growing they need at least daily water and perhaps more often with this kind of heat and lower humidity. So, despite my good intentions most years I go out and gather new ones after big storms. I don't like taking plants that are growing in the wild (even on a phone line) but once they are blown to the ground I consider it a rescue Whistling

I have to dunk my tillandsias here for about an hour or so, once a week especially when it just gets too bone dry in summer. But the rest of the year especially when it is cool, just spraying them works. As long as they get lots of air..they thrive better outdoors.

You are so lucky Spitz! You got rain and humidity there! Conditions the tilly's enjoy a lot.

Would love to see a photo of you collecting the tilly's Jonna Big Grin

When we use to live in Torrance, CA, I love frequenting the Rainforest Flora nursery there, love their various tillys there, enjoying the waterfall set-up and tilly's attached to the rocks, so pretty and natural! Always ending up buying some to bring home. I was still a newbie then..killed some of my tilly's. I underestimated the light aspect. But I have a better grip of them now. Smiling

The ones here can take a lot of sun if they have enough water and humidity. Those fuzzy phone lines are in full sun but in the rainy season the humidity stays over 80% most of the time and there are daily rains. So, in that condition, they can take the full blistering tropical sun. I doubt they even need watering if the humidity is high enough. I prefer to keep them in mostly light but not direct sun, maybe a few hours morning or evening. It's easier to keep them hydrated through the dry winter that way. When we were doing a lot of cave diving and thus hiking around in the outback, I would collect them in the jungle when they had fallen to the ground. The ones in the trees though were not in full sun but in filtered sun and light, they seemed to look healthier than any others. They are survivors, I think they are a lot hardier than it is assumed. They can't handle cold, and they don't like dry but outside of that they will manage.
