Hello, I was wanting to ask the ones that have made glass projects what they use to drill thru a plate or saucer that will not crack them? I found some odd cup and saucers at a tag sale for my bird feeders. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Please add your pics please. I am looking for some new Christmas projects to work on.

Teresa, I am not sure about it. I think you might want to ask this on a different thread so they see it.

Try asking over on this thread. The thread "Totems, Stacks and Glass in the Garden" in Garden Art forum

Good luck!

At the 2008 AHS National Convention held in Houston, Texas - the garden of Boone Keeling had a beautiful display of stained glass windows (3). Also a club member for Lone Star Daylilies by the name of Mike Peppers has an arrangement of stained glass for a display (2). I bought a stain glass window at a large flea market a number of years ago and my hubby drilled two holes in the bottom of the window and inserted rebar rods into it for stands (1). Shown below are pictures of each.

hmm, wonder how they did that? Is it a metal rod thru each bottle? That is interesting.

That is really cool and I wonder if they somehow painted the bottles or if they were already that color, specifically the pink, orange, and red ones.

I LIKE that Hurray! Hurray!

Teresa... well my money would be on aircraft cable... with an eyelet on the top and bottom to secure it there...requiring a smaller hole than a rod...
Vicki... well I'd think they had found some pink.orange and redish bottles.. although you could get a clear color from perhaps a stainedglass kit... and coat the inside of the bottles with it.. it should hold up well inside the bottle..
yes... I thought it was cute..

True, didn't think of the cable. I bet the bottles are that color and not painted. It made a pretty divider.

There is a you tube demonstration of how to create wind chimes, perhaps you could use the same procedure to string the bottles
to make the wall of bottles.

Well... some were square brown bottles... they surely have them there Vic... or does all the liquor...where you are there in NC come in a mason jar....mmmmm
OH..come to visit... garbage pickup here is about like the old trips to the dump they used to let you have.. just it's spread all along the streets difficult but you're there anyway... and just have to observe ... recycling day has all the bottles you could desire... the plastic ones whit a cash value are all taken by the pickers and redeamers.. as they are light to carry... so even recyclable galss if often left... there's a nice blue beer bottle out now... or stop by a redemption center ... there will be a slew of folks awiting the turn in ... nd you can go down the line and pay $ 0. 10 a bottle... twice what they can get ... and have a colored wall in no time... love the bottle houses... with the walls projecting the colored light inside...

Hi Teresa, I have not drilled through glass but have read that you need to drill the glass in water or with running water to keep the drill and the glass cool while drilling them. You will need to get a drill that is specifically for drilling glass. I think it is a diamond type drill. I hope this helps. Jeanne from gardenglassgems.com

I do stained glass and recently did a Blues panel with a guitar player and on his guitar I used real strings and a real slide and real knobs anyway I wanted the knobs to turn so I drilled holes for the knobs and the tuning pegs. I bought a 1/8" Glass and tile drill bit for my Dremel and drilled all 8 holes. It was very easy. Here's the finished product.

the Dremel bit number is 662DR and they also make a 1/4" drill bit for glass and tile but that was too big for my purposes but might work for you. I found it at Lowes, Home Depot didn't seem to have many Dremel bits.
