Cold Weather Gardening Tip

Watering before a predicted freeze helps outoor plants, especially container plants, make it through a hard freeze by allowing the plants to take up moisture before the soil or ground is frozen, preventing water from reaching the root zone. Making sure your outdoor plants have adequate hydration is one of the best ways to protect them from harsh weather.

Thread OP

This was a method i used several years ago and it worked fine for me in Va. Pots were laid on their side all winter to keep water out and no heaving. In spring the growth had turned upward a little but soon staightened out and i did not lose a pot.

Tee, don't mind my asking but if there is a freeze, which means that water crystallises, what about the water in the tissues of the plant, wont it become shard and burst the cells?
See, if you put potatoes in the deep freezer then take them out after some time are they edible? Edible in this instance means are they worth eating and if not why? Try it and you will understand what i am trying to say.
Regards,
Masud.

Masud -- I know what you are trying to say. The plant in that pot in the photo has been there through two or three winters. Here I am not talking about the fruit of a plant. I am talking about certain plants themselves.
I garden for the pollinators.
