Im a sucker for black/dark purple eyes, like Just Fabulous. I finally ordered Broadway Last Mohican. I just love that little daylily and that black eye. Boy do I hope it looks like that in person. Ive never been able to get a decent miniature seedling of my own. I tried for some mini spiders too, with no luck.

Picture is from the Petits last spring. Ted showed it to me because of my fondness for the dark eye. Its a seedling that he was evaluating.

Jim Murphy told me that most of theirs (Woodhenge) are "hard dormants," which means that they really need that winter chill in order to bloom well each year. I live in Bakersfield, and lately we hardly get down to freezing at all in winter now. So he told me he didn't think theirs would do well here. And it was certainly true for CHESAPEAKE CRABLEGS, which dwindled over three years and the blooms just got smaller and smaller.

But there are other dormants that do just fine here. SPIDER MIRACLE is the one I've had the longest (probably 5 years), and it dies completely back in winter and then comes back with beautiful blooms each year.

Most daylilies you have to cut back at some point in the year anyway, so if you have a dormant you like, Va. seems a perfect place for them. I personally like the dormants, even here in FL. They have such nice foliage in the spring. Lotus Position is a great example of that. Not to say, as mentioned above, sometimes they just dwindle a bit each year, I find that true no matter what they are. Some I just cant seem to keep going no matter what I do.

Ann, seems like we have similar taste! It is a beautiful daylily and I hope to get one next year. Thumbs up

Thanks Pam, I do have plenty and I will see what happens. I was concerned that they would not get the proper cold spell and I have read about them fizzling out after a few years. Glad to hear you have had good success, how long do your dormants last? What is the oldest one you have?

Susan, I forgot to answer your question *Blush*

I have several dormants and have added more this year. I don't really look at the foliage habit so much because most things do well here, but I have purposely bought dormants this year because I want to cross dormants with the evergreens and semi-ev to try and get dormants that do well in the south or a foliage type that does well all over. A lot of the dormants are going dormant, but I have some that are showing no signs whatsoever of going under, some need more cold than others to go under. The ones that are slowly turning yellow and gradually dying back are what is called photoperiod dormants meaning the foliage slowly dies back as the day length shortens in the fall and don't have to have a cold spell. By next month all my dormants should be under because we really haven't had any really cold days until now, it was 40º this morning but the "feels like" said it was 34º and I believe it!! It's only 53º right now, supposed to be 35º tonight and next week we will have 2 days that are supposed to be 32º. I hate the cold weather, but at least it will kill off some of the insects that may be lurking around.

The oldest dormant I have right now is LILLY DACHE (1957), most of the older ones that I used to have I had to get rid of when I moved because I had no room for "garden flowers". If I wasn't hybridizing and only had "garden flowers" I would buy only dormants.

I have ICICLES from Floyd Cove that is reg. as a dormant, but it hasn't gone dormant yet. BROADWAY LAST MOHICAN shrunk down earlier this fall and started growing back when it warmed back up into the high 80s and 90s, but should go under soon. I don't think my BROADWAY ATTRACTIONS has gone under yet either.

What did you think of Broadway last mohican....does it look anything like the picture?? So glad someone actually has it to get some good info. I am sick to death of throwing my money after flowers that look nothing like the pictures.
Another one Im going to have is that orange double of James that you list from time to time. Im blank on the name but if it looks like the picture, I will love it.

I have BROADWAY LAST MOHICAN, and here was its first bloom in May of this year. I also have another picture taken in sunlight in the database, but this one will give you an idea of how it looked here in shade with a little bit of it in sunlight. I love it! It seems that just about all the Broadway's are dormants, although I have noticed a couple of SEV's.

Thanks Tink, I have had similar weather and do notice that some have gone dormant while others are thriving and growing. Weird, but I do have plenty and I just want to see how they do before I spend money on anything nice. I would love to have Rose Kennedy, but it's a little expensive at 69.99 a SF. I really like that Icicles from FC is it diamond dusted?

. Lovey dubby

Oh, I did not mean the year. (1957) I meant the one that has been in your yard the longest. Which ones have you had the longest.

LILLY DACHE, is gorgeous!!

Pam, it was a good day that day! We got to meet you and Leslie in the Petits' garden. These are times that I treasure and will long remember. I like the seedling, too. Just Fabulous is one of my favorites. We added Broadway Last Mohican last spring. I don't know if I took a picture or not. I purposely did not spend a lot of time taking pictures this past summer, and now I regret it. Thumbs down Betty has a good picture of BLM.

Pam, I would say BLM looks pretty much like Betty's photo when it blooms here. It's James' plant and I didn't really pay that close of attention to it when it bloomed though; I thought I had a photo of it, but I must not have taken one.

The double of James' is called BUDDY'S GLORIA and that photo I use when I list it is the one I took this year. I have one from last year in the data base that bloomed not too long after I got it. Some of the first blooms are single, but after that they are all double (it's reg. at 95%).

Susan, Icicles may have a little diamond dusting, but what you are seeing in the photo is dew; the photo was taken at 7:30 so the dew was still on the plants.

Just so you know Floyd Cove has Rose F Kennedy for $50 DF

Rolling on the floor laughing opps thought you meant the year. Most of the dormants I have like LILLY DACHE I got in fall 2009 or 2010; I've only had daylilies since 2009.

Talking about Best Edge the seedling, I have it and it is gorgeous. I sold seeds from it this year. I also have Priscilla's Smile and like it even more. Priscilla's Smile is a cross Dan Trimmer made which was Best Edge X Best Edge, because he could not actually sell Best Edge. I think Priscilla's Smile is superior to Best Edge, ii is larger, has better scapes and is even more fertile. Priscilla's Smile is much easier to find and buy. I bought a single fan of Best Edge when it was sold on the auction, I have a clump now and love it. Either of these would be great to cross with Icicles.

They are beautiful, I do love the idea of getting some good seeds, also it is a beautiful daylily. abundantdaylilies was selling Best Edge as part of a package deal along with Priceless or something. (100.00)
I heard about Priscilla's Smile but never saw one till now. I did not know it was actually better than Best Edge!
Wow, Dan Trimmer has a lot of nice daylilies and I think he is out of Priscilla's Smile, just the same it is $300.00, isn't that a car payment?? Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Dan may be out of it, but when I ordered it, it was $100.00 not 300.00. It was 300.00 the year of introduction.

Wow, I just looked and Floyd Cove has it for $35.00, awesome.

ok, I will check the general list, but might need to wait for a single fan or else buy it next year. That single fan that abundantdaylilies has is sounding better all the time, but that is Best Edge, would be nice if he would just sell it for 50 but at least it is a fixed price and he has three so it gives me time to think about it. I think I would like Priscilla's Smile better.
