Thank you for commenting on my pretty cactus. I have a Disocactus x +hybridus that I have cuttings and plants for sale. It is the ugliest plant I have ever seen but the flowers are just beautiful. This one came from my friend from South Africa. It was so bit they had to cut off the bottom to get it into the car

This ia a hybrid of Disocactus phylianthoides x Disocactus speciosus. This plant has long been confused as the species, Disocactus ackenmannii. The oroginal plant was grown in cultivation in the early to mid 1800's but towards the turn of the 20th century, this hybrid plant was introduced. According to the real professionals, the true species plant of Disocactus ackermannii is difficult to grow. But this hybrid is said to be practically indestructible. That is what makes it so popular.

Hey, that is your lesson for today gang. I am off to do some volunteer work and then make some chili. It is going to get very cold here tonight and tomorrow my gang will have hot chili to take to work for lunch. Thumbs up Have a healthy (no flu) day if you can help it and a happy one.

Hi Jacquie -- I have one much like that and the cuttings came from The Netherlands. The cuttings traveled here fairly unprotected in a jiffy mailer and are doing just fine in spite of the fact they had to have taken quite a beating. It is sort of an ugly duckling indeed! I want to purchase a cutting of yours later in the year. I'll get back to you, as they say.

Thanks for posting that. nodding

Tee,
I think what you are calling "air roots" are reg roots that are looking for something to grow in. They look to be coming out of the bottom of the upper joints and hanging down. ."Air roots" should be curling around the closest thing looking for support help. or at least reaching upwards.
This is just my opinion.
Masud:
I personally don't think you will be able to get any of these Hybrids to cling to a wall and grow upward like the Epies. do. Can't comment on the true plant species because i haven't had any experience with them..
I usually have 100 or more at any 1 time and have never seen 1 that has put out holding type roots in Schlum. Hybrids
These are my opinions on this so please don't take my comments as argumentative Big Grin Big Grin I tip my hat to you. .

I see what you are saying, Cliff. They are aerial roots but more the adventitious type perhaps.

How much is shipping on the chili. nodding Green Grin! Hilarious!

Anytime Tee. Just let me know. When it first arrived there was a bag of cuttings with it. I gave them to the Farmers Market down the street and they planted them. They are now selling them in hanging baskets for $29.95.....we laugh about it because when they got them they looked horrible. Talk about ugly ducklings. They will be beautiful when they bloom. Should bloom this year for sure. Rolling on the floor laughing

See there are aerial roots like the Banyan tree which it sends down to the soil. Then there are certain clinging roots that I have noticed on philodendron, they cling very tight. If you have a Monstera growing in the soil, it also if it against the walls starts clinging and slowly its connection with the soil is cut. Now Tee might be correct and wrong at the same time. While these are not native to this area except for figs the conditions are nearly identical except for winter. Tee this cactus native habitat is down South and West towards Africa. Cactus as it is can make do with the moisture in the air, dew plus what ever rain that falls on it. So it does not have to compete with figs or philodendrons in the root department.
Adventitious or superfluous. Tee Confused since when did nature become superfluous?
No need to argue, I just found the source and got one because they were not blooming and the nursery owner did not want to give several of same colour so he asked me back in Feb when they bloom here. Let me study it behavior as a hanging plant and when I have enough material I will take cuttings and place them against walls. Lets see what happens or one of you could take a piece of two inch diameter PVC pipe cover it with long coconut coir, tie the coir in place then place the pipe piece amongst your cactus for it to cling to damp coir and lets see if it clings and climbs. Just an idea, how you use it is up to you.
Regards,
Arif.

That must be it. I opened the etsy store again. You guys get a better price on cubits than on any of the other stores. I usually give a discount from people who buy on cubits if I know they are buying from there. You can just treemail me and I will help you. Just keep checking the cubits store site for what is available. Just now shipping is questionable because of the cold weather. If the nite temps are above freezing, I ship, if not. We wait. I usually correspond with the buyer the weekend before I ship to see what the weather is where they live.Since I ship all over the USA it changes frequently and our temps have been warm. I have been shipping up until last Monday.

I'm excited that I have a bloom on my Schlumbergera. I started thinking about them again after looking at all the beautiful ones here but I thought they needed cold. I saw one at a nursery a month or two ago and brought it home. It didn't seem to do much and I kind of forgot it, I never got around to potting it. The other day I noticed it sitting there in its little black plastic bag and a bud was forming! I moved it into more sun and look... I have a bloom!

I took this pic yesterday:

and these 3 today:

This shows the whole little plant, now I have to find it a pot.
