I have a Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) that I planted in a semi / full shaded spot about 4 years ago. It grows every year, but it has never bloomed and never produced any berries. Should I move it to a more sunnier location? I was told by the nursery that it would do just fine under my monstrous lilac bush that's about 12' tall & about 8' wide and produces some pretty deep shade. Are they moisture loving? Again, the same nursery guy said that they would do fine in an arid area.

Help? I'd love to see some berries SOMETIME... nodding nodding nodding

Hi Toni,
I have not grown this shrub but read this. http://www.missouribotanicalga...

This said that it has more berries in sun. Maybe a bit of a hair cut for the lilac to let more light in.
Hope someone else chimes in that grows the shurb. I see it growing all around here in the PNW, it is beautiful. Big Grin

They do love moisture, they are a woodland plant. I think that might be the problem unless you need a pollinator but they would have told you that at the nursery. Thumbs up

Rats. They didn't say I needed a pollinator either. And it's in an extremely dry area.. very very very very very xeric. OK, another plant to be moved. I can put it elsewhere where it'd get a lot more moisture (which isn't saying anything.. it doesn't get ANY moisture there). And I desperately need to give that lilac a MAJOR haircut. It's huge, old (about 30 years old), and very top-heavy & leggy on the bottom.

Thanks everyone!! Green Grin!

Toni,
One more thought, you might want to post this on the tree and shrub forum for more ideas?

I haven't found any references that suggest that another specimen would be needed for pollination. But if it's not blooming (note that the flowers aren't terribly showy and could possibly be overlooked) that in itself would explain the lack of fruit. The Hillier Guide to Trees and Shrubs does say that Symphoricarpos albus is "not as free-fruiting"as S. albus var. laevigatus... though that's not much help to know!
We have one of the S. x doorenbosii hybrids (with pink fruit), and unfortunately, it doesn't produce much fruit either.

Snowberry is native to the Pacific Northwest, and I often see them in ditches and growing along with sword ferns (lovely combination) so they must like it wet.
