Sure hope that seedling knows how special it is and blooms with everything you hope for! I'm with Fred, if I did that it would most likely be a one bud wonder and ugly too. Smiling Wish it were warm enough to put things outside during the day, we have been in the 30's with flurries.

There are always several sdlgs kept each year because they are different or I want to see them bloom again. The keep bed still has a few that go back to 03, sometimes I can't make up my mind. Whistling

Thanks Teresa!

Ann, I would be babying that cross too, especially if it was the only one.
Been known to do that with a few.

I have a few seedlings that I've had for 10 years just because they are different. Not pretty - but different.

I like working with things that don't look like anything else I have seen.

I made some crosses this year, but didn't harvest the seed. (bad girl!) I have done that every year for years. I did plant some in fall of 2011, and they are doing ok... so sooner or later I should see some bloom from them.

I want to see those flowers bloom too, Julie. You have been a bad girl. Rolling on the floor laughing
But then, I also know how there are instances where other things take time away
from getting everything done we want to do. I seem to never get all my to-do lists
checked off and discarded. They just keep adding up.

Shirlee, you should see my computer area, sticky note heaven!
I am drawn to blooms that are different too, that is why there are so many older sdlgs still floating around. A newer one I am fascinated with is this ...

On cooler days/nights it shows this rich chocolate/mahogany brown

Thumb of 2012-11-29/Char/bb20cd

When it stays above 60 at night and there are warmer days it looks like this

I love the form, wide petals and sepals, just can't think of a thing to do with it for crosses. Does anyone grow JD Stadler's Black Fury? I'm wondering if it might be worth getting to try.

I'm intrigued by that look too. I'd probably try it with Black Fury, Maarten Verhaert and Westbourne Unruly Stripes... if I had them, that is!

That is an amazing daylily, Char. Is that one a seedling? Such different colors with the temps.
I like the colors, the blunt sepals, and the form. What to cross it with
depends on where you want to go with it. Make it larger or smaller? Add more edge?
More buds and branches? Add a pattern? There are several chocolate colored daylilies out there,
but I'm not familiar with them.

Char...your daylily reminds me a lot of Fujita Scale which changes appearance also. There are some photos in the database for reference.

Do you know the parents of your seedling or in this an unknown cultivar? I'd love to see something like it with teeth or if the same ploidy, crossing it with Jerry Hyatt might be interesting!

Half the problem is not knowing which direction to go with it...brown or black, it can't make up it's mind either Hilarious! It's a 2011 first bloom kid so is only 3 fans now, can't wait to see it at clump strenght!
Fujita Scale is very similar with a touch more gray, FS could be a fun cross and maybe keep the changeling look. There's another Bremer plant I've been wanting for a few years this would give me a good reason to place an order, are you enabling me? Westbourne Unruly Stripes is really pretty. I don't have any of Mary Jane's plants here yet but have been wanting to add her WB Teresas Frilly Dress. Some great suggestions, thank you!

I haven't measured it but would say it is close to 6", 32" +/-, nice dormant plant with 4 & 5 way br which is extremely good for this far north. The cross was Stoned Soul Picnic X West of the Moon and there were two kept from the cross, this one and another that does the same thing only not as pretty in form. Certainly not what I was expecting from these two....

I have Jerry Hyatt and some seedlings from it, more interesting odd stuff hidden in that one! Bloomed an orange with the leopard pattern this year.Mother Nature has a fun time with me, orange is my least favorite color and she seems to get great pleasure out of trying to make me like them.

Char I have a weird milk chocolate pinched, pleated seedling. I should send you pollen next year. I know one parent is Casting the Runes, but i'm drawing a blank without looking it up. Think it was Shooter's Chocalate Splash. I might have enough plants to send a fan instead if pollen. I will put that on my April calendar now so I remember!

Thank you Juli! I did cross it to some sculpts this summer. Who knows what the seedlings will look like. What were the crosses you planted in 2011?

Hope they all bloom next season, and we get to see loads of photos.
Of course, I understand some in the north may take longer to bloom.

I planted mostly dip spideries that involved my own seedlings. I only had a handful of tets. I know the best looking seedlings are (Hyatt sdlg = Benz red sdlg x Photon Torpedo) x Arrogant Bastard. Next would be Fabulous Frieda x Prometheus Revisited. I think I did have a couple sculpt crosses.

And, Confused Shrug! I looked up the brownish sculpt and it was not what I thought - LOL... Chocolate Splash x (Hanson sdlg from Capernaum Sin - garden name CapSinOP)

Those sound like really good crosses! The LA is sooo dangerous this time of year. There are more seeds in the fridge than I have room to plant and yet I still find myself bidding on the occasional cross from someone.

Orange is my least favorite color and I didn't get an image of it... kicking myself big time.So much to do during the very short season here and I wasn't planning to keep it.
The cross was Jerry Hyatt X Wispy Rays and it was 1st year bloom. Not sure what I was looking for doing that cross Shrug! but the sdlg's all had huge blooms and spotting in various colors. I did pull the orange one out last minute in Oct., had two more holes in the last row of new keeps, it will have more room and I'll get a better look at it next year. I don't think any of the others are worth keeping, but we'll see what happens in 7 months.
