I know we've seen an Ugly Blooms thread (or something to that effect) in the past, has anyone ever started an Ugly Seedling thread? I'm really appreciating my couple days off of work and since I haven't been at ATP too much lately I thought it would be fun to start a thread on this. If it's been done before could someone direct me to that link? I'm not the greatest at doing "searches" here at ATP.

I'll start off with a few here....

We produce a bunch of ugly ones here- we just don't take their pictures. That's why you'll never see my picture!
Sandy, those ugly ones of yours look better than some we have all bought! Many people would like to have them. I like the form of the second one, maybe you could cross it with something and get a seedling you like from it. If we wait for a "perfect" seedling, we may never be satisfied. I keep thinking that even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while, so maybe I can get lucky and have one that looks pretty good. We certainly have some good breeding stock. Fred Turner, who is largely responsible for getting Doris and me into DLs, said that we'd only keep one out of 100 seedlings, if that many. I thought he was wrong. Like always, he was right. Fred had some of the best seedlings to never be registered, blue and green double edges before we knew anyone else was even trying for them. It's a shame that he "got too busy" running a business and quit hybridizing. Fred is one of the nicest, sharing guys you'd ever meet- sort of like our own Fred- Spunky.
We will continue to produce ugly seedlings, in the never-ending quest for that "special" one. Same as all of you who dab! If we don't have dreams and goals... well, it's too much work and expense to keep doing it.
Happy Black Friday- do you know if there are any specials on the LA?
We all have much to be thankful for, including all of you guys. You're always there with something positive to say!
Bud

I loved the last "ugly" thread...and I'm loving this one too.
Specially that part about how even a blind hog should be able to find an acorn once in a while...
Maybe I will cross something after all.
Who cares if they come out ugly.

Have you seen Van Gogh's Ear? That is pretty ugly...but it got registered!

Hi Sandy, I love ugly pictures probably more than the pretty ones! I think it's because I really love to laugh! Hilarious! Hilarious! However, I don't think your blooms are ugly at all! I'd be thrilled if my seedlings looked that good! Most of them were awful, and it was my first year ever seeing any of my seedlings bloom!

Here was the last thread. I'd post my ugly pictures, but they are already posted on this one

I don't know as I have yet to have a seedling bloom ( just started crossing) but I thought you can't judge a seedling from it's first flower? Also some of the photos look like the plants were quite stressed from heat / drought and I'm sure that would make the first blooms even worse than they would be otherwise. As a complete beginner I would give them another chance but I'm a rescuer of all unwanted / rejected and homeless plants at heart. Maybe that will change when I have my own ugly seedlings? Hilarious!

I love the ugly seeding pics...I have read that hundreds are composted to get "the ONE" but if I grew it from seed I think it would BE "The One" no matter how ugly it is. Smiling This is my first year with daylilies...so I agree with Brian. But I love that the first one is just "wrong" on so many levels...haha! Maybe makes it more endearing when you think of what it's "cousins" look like! ...So ugly they are cute!

Yes you are correct Brian, you can't judge a seedling from first blooms. Here, since we have such rapid growth and most will bloom the first year (if planted at the correct time), we will judge them on rebloom. I have several I moved before rebloom, but I got mine planted late last year that I didn't get rebloom this year. The first scape blooms and the rebloom scape blooms can look totally different.

By the way, those were my very first seedling blooms.... ever. They had been started indoors in spring 2011.

And yes, the reason I didn't compost any of them is because miracles CAN happen (or so I believe) and perhaps next year won't be so hot, nor thrips so bad. The first two of mine were stressed badly, but the last two.... they are just sad.

I am not into hybridizing - not like many here. I am just enjoying playing around with a few seeds, and seeing what happens. There were 45 in this bed. This years seedlings, I have all of 18 survive the summer. So nothing big. Currently I have the space to allow them 2-3 years to truly show me what they have "got" and this past summer was stressful here in my garden due to heat, drought, thrips, etc.

By the way, there is a daylily called Discarded Beauty - and it was a seedling that was actually discarded, and I believe (if I remember the story correctly) it was found the next season blooming away on the discard pile - and got a second chance. I find it on the LA periodically.
