Shannon - that seedlng was a full 9", but didn't work with my program. In my program a 9" flower on a 25" scape gets composted.

This seedling is 7.5" on a 36" scape - I will work with this one, it was put with Dancing Chevrons..

And that is exactly it for hybridizers. If it doesn't work with your program, don't bother with it - at least that is what I have been told. So I don't 'nlame' Lyle for getting rid of that massive flower on the short scape.

I have purchased some seedlings from Fred on the LA, and I just absolutely LOVE them, but they must not have worked with his program, so he didn't register them and sold them. I won't register them either, but they are really cool spidery seedlings.

That may be one reason that I am not into hybridizing as much as just playing around with it. I am having too much fun with my 15 to 50 seedlings to concentrate on a couple of aspects of daylilies at the moment. Of course this could change at any time, I have only been goofing off with my babies for 2 years so far.

And one of the nicest aspects of ATP is that the hybridizers DO come here, post photos of their seedlings and help us newbies along by giving us reasons why they did, or didn't keep a plant.Invaluable learning experience. ~Jan

Trudy, generally, a couple "big name" hybridizers I know try to select 10% each year.

So, if they have 10,000 seedlings bloom, they will select 1000. The next year, they will select 100 from that 1000. Then the next year, 10 from that 100. So, in the end, 10 from 10,000.

But, then, Jim Biaglow, who has passed on now, would select 10 from 50 and then 2-3 to intro from that. He had some nice plants! RAPTOR being one of them. He was disabled, in a wheel chair and could not do large numbers of seedlings. So, he was very, very careful what crosses he made, and only grew a few hundred seed a year.

This is one of Fred's that I bought a few years ago. I understand why he did not keep it even though I like it.

When it opens correctly it looks great.

But it does not always look like that. Sometimes it does this.

It is not that different from other things out there and it still only has 3-4 buds after 3 years! It was a seedling that I bought from someone else and I don't even know the parentage. All things considered, I would rather give garden space to something different.
