Does anybody recognize this cultivar? Has anybody grown it? I bought " Jewel Of The Night " This fall and it's blooming now and ALL the flowers are deformed. The max number of petals is 5 and most are twisted. It's new and I know that can have an effect on the flowering but all 5 flowers are the same. It's a beautiful rich red but the colour doesn't make up for the deformity. Confused

I can't find any info on this one. I think growers sometimes make up names in order to get around copyright issues. If the flowers are all deformed I would be worried that the bulb is infected with some sort of virus.

I was wondering about that or possibly freezing a bit during shipping.

I have some pictures now (not great but you can see it) and It has finally put out one "normal" flower with all 6 petals ( one out of nine flowers, not the best ratio). I was going to put a link to the vendors site to show what it was supposed to look like but they have removed it already. Basically the picture they had looked very much like the 'Scarlet Baby' I've posted except the flowers were a little more trumpet shaped. The vendor is checking with her supplier and has planted a few herself to see what she gets but agrees it definitely isn't what their picture showed. There is one more stalk developing on this bulb and I'm anxiously waiting to see what they turn out like.

Thumb of 2012-11-30/bearsearch/f379ea This is 'Scarlet Baby' close to 'Jewel of the Night' was supposed to be.

Thumb of 2012-11-30/bearsearch/4ccffa The "normal" flower. I used the pollen in an experiment.

Very interesting. The form of the flower you have, is closer to that of the cybisters. At least you have a vendor that is willing to look into the situation.

An update on this particular plant. It's had 3 stalks with 4 to 5 flowers each and there has only been one normal flower per stem. As an experiment I've used the pollen from each normal flower and crossed it with Scarlet Baby and Bogota. I've back crossed the Scarlet Baby onto the JewelO.T.Night and have two rather unusual looking pos and one that appears to have taken but is too soon to tell for sure. Waiting to see if any fertile seeds form and germinate.
