Here i go again. I was asked to fine this truly magnificent plant. It is very rare to find a good source to order from. I have located one of the largest growers in Canada. They do not sell the plants to ship to individuals BUT I have convinced them to sell me their plants. I will have a trucking company bring them down from Canada. I will have to drive about 1 hr to meet the truck at a greenhouse for pick up of our plants. You can find them on ebay smaller and not in bloom or you can spend a lot more money then the deal I have obtained. There are 2 sellers are in Hawaii and Thailand and i have contacted both and mine is so much better deal so here it is....

Medinilla magnifica Is the name and there are a lot of medinlla so if you look it up on internet make sure you find the medinilla magnifica there is a BIG difference you will see this is very rare compared to the others it has pink brackets (leaves) on the flower spikes. These flower spikes can last 2-3 months!!! Then you pinch them back and you can have more blooms to follow.

here is a picture of the flower spikes (THESE ARE NOT THE EXACT PLANTS YOU WILL RECEIVE)

Although I'm not ordering (because I already own Medinilla cumingii and don't have room for another Medinilla) Sad I just wanted to say that if you've never seen a blooming Medinilla plant in person you will fall in love instantly!

The common name for this plant is "Pink Lantern" and the hanging lantern-like blooms are really gorgeous! Although the photo's show how pretty the flowers are, they are even more beautiful in person!

For more photo's and growing information, here's the link to Medinilla magnifica in the ATP database:

I agree, stunning plant and not hard to care for! I had several of these as houseplants when I lived in England.

I've had a Medinilla cumingii as a container plant for about five years and I agree, they aren't difficult at all. My plant stays outside pretty much year round and has survived many cold winter nights. If we are predicted to have temperatures drop into the 40's I move the pot up against the south side of the house and throw a blanket over it and remove the blanket during the day; but if we experience consecutive nights of temp's in the 30's or lower I move my plant into an enclosed porch (and still cover it with a light blanket.)

*Blush* I must admit that I'm a bad plant caretaker sometimes and my Medinilla isn't looking very spectacular right now because it's been situated amongst some shrubbery for @ 6 months and not getting enough light. I might go out today and repot it into fresh soil ... and move it to a brighter location.
