HI Sherry you sent me pineapple and coconut. I forgot they looked different from the unscented ones and killed a few babies before I realized what they were. I just hope mine survive this winter in the plant room.

No nutmeg here unless it's fruity scented. I swear the apple one smells like pineapple.

Caroline, did you find a scented geranium seed source yet? You mentioned the scented geranium nursery in Nebraska, yes, officially they sell plants, but did you email them about seeds? They might sell you some, they're very nice people.
Scented leaf geraniums are pretty prolific seed setters! The hybrids probably won't come true from seed, but the species will.
There are many herb growers that sell scented leaf geraniums also. It might be worth asking them! You might get a hodgepodge mixture, but
that could be fun!

Thanks for the welcome, Larry! I have grown scented leaf geraniums on and off since the "plant boom" in the seventies.
I'm not growing anything this year, so I am looking at what everybody else is growing!

Drooling

I did get seeds for Attar of Roses from Seedaholic, and two germinated.
And I think I had seeds for coconut, but did not get germination.
One garden center here has brought in plants.
Richter's sells some plants or plugs also.
But the plants are pricey.

Caroline, you got no germination with the coconut? It self sows all over the place....

A couple came up here with me during the move as volunteers in other pots. I'll save seed if you want to try again...LMK...

That is kind of you.
Please do save some seeds for me.
I think they need more heat than I gave those seeds.
I will start them under lights this time.

Caroline, you might want to try pre-sprouting the seeds. This works really well on larger seeds. Just place seeds on a moist paper towel, roll up,
and place in a Ziploc bag. Put it in a warm place and check in 24 hours.
If the seeds are viable , they usually
start sprouting by then. Then move to
your container, and cover them lightly. I use a plastic fork that that has been cleaned with rubbing alcohol, and rinsed with water. Rolling my eyes.

I was sprouting them in moist vermiculite on top of frig.
I had best wait until I turn on my grow lights in the basement as it is warmer there.

woofie said:Supposedly, the scented ones won't necessarily come true from seed. However, the person making that claim (heh heh, someone in the plant selling biz Whistling ) also said the seeds were fine like dust, which certainly isn't true of the seeds I've collected from my plants! But that probably is true anyway. Like I said, my red flowered plants gave me seeds that produced some pink flowers as well as red ones.

Woofie, I just ran across the blog post you were referring to, yeah, it seemed a little self-promoting. Like you, I have never seen dust-like pelargonium seed, but possibly some of the species could be that way?
The problem is that the hybrids won't
come true, of course, but which of the older types are hybrids? I read somewhere that the graveolens types
are actually crosses between 2 or more species, that surprised me.
At the very least, you could end up with something like the parent plants, and since we are talking about scented leaf types, that isn't such a bad thing!
So, everybody, save that seed, share with the world, let's make the world a better smelling place! Thumbs up

Does anyone have photos of the seeds? Just curious if they really are "fine like dust."
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

Actually, I think I have pics of the coconut scented .....I'm sending them to Caroline, though waiting also to get some fresh to send with them. In the ground, in my previous climate, in SoCal they reseed a lot which is fine with me. They've moved with me to far northwestern California now, having arrived as stowaways in a few pots. I've sown a few plants from the seeds brought with me and am deciding now about putting some in the ground to see if they do as well in-ground here. The only other one that I've had that reseeds a lot is the Apple scented, which had the nice habit of reseeding into all the surrounding pots in my nursery shadehouse. I wish it had made the trip with me also.....to my knowledge, they come true from seed...at least as long as I had them, which was years, they were always the same.

Have to go into town, will see if I can find the seed for pics when I get back....I'd never bothered with seed before since I always had them for cuttings....and the ones that self-sow, well, they did their job.....
