Several years ago I received some Iris's from a friend who said he helped hybridize them in what was a 'clinic' at North Seattle Community College (I don't think they do any hybridizing there anymore)
I've been trying to figure out if he ever listed this Iris with AIS (I don't think he did)
My question is this, How important is it to list a cultivar? Here are a couple photos of the blooms, its a very pretty plant called 'Seattle Sunset'

Thanks for your time

It is fine to enjoy it and share it with others with the clear understanding that it is not a registered variety and shouldn't be represented as such. It could not be shown in an AIS sanctioned show. I don't think it would be ethical to sell it as a named variety. It has a garden name but not a registered name. Pretty color.....

Hi Greg. I can't be of any help at all in the information that you're requesting -- but I absolutely love your Iris. Would you consider swapping a couple of rhizomes? I have a nice selection! Rolling my eyes.

Greg, it is not registered, I just checked the registry. He could probably still register it, especially if he remembers the parentage.

But important, yes and no. To the average gardener who just wants a pretty, no. To those of us who want to enter shows etc., yes. Or for those people like Jo who it drives crazy until she gets a name, yes. To me, I have both registered and unregistered and love them both, but never ever trade an un named iris without telling the person it's not named.

Hi all, thanks for letting me know...I'm new to this and definitely a novice gardener Sticking tongue out
I kept trying to add this Iris to the database and it wasn't being excepted, and no reason was given,
I'm glad it didn't go through because it would have messed up the data (sorry!) glad I asked *Blush*
Hi Mary Ann, this is a very pretty plant and I have several rhizomes that I could send you...why don't you send me a tree mail and we can exchange address and info.
Cheers and thanks again for info. everyone

I know, I'm surprised other hybridizers haven't already used it! This Iris is unusual, it goes from this bright orangie, to what I call rootbeer, as it fades it goes to more and more brown...In spring I'll gladly share/trade rhizomes with folks Hurray!
Thanks

I'm so glad that people want these even without the names! I have a local friend here who wasn't sure, and then I showed her a photo and she's like "ah yep, I'll find room somewhere!" Its just that I want other colors and types and I'm growing them in a parking strip so space is very limited!
And as all of you know, when Iris's are happy they go crazy with the rhizomes! (they should be called friendship flowers!)
Bye Smiling

Yes it will Shannon. And can you see it with deep purples? Or blacks?

Greg -- I don't have many NoID's -- I like to know the names of my Irises. But I have a few that I bought years ago before I realized how important Irises were going to become to me, and that I like too well to discard. And I've made exceptions for a few since then, that I liked so well that I didn't care what their names were. Yours is the newest one of those. All of my Irises have identification tags out there in the garden, and yours will too. Likely it will be *Greg's Seattle Sunset*!!

I know in the daylily world we call them seedlings. When I started collecting I thought they meant first yr plants but if not registered they stay a unregistered seedling. Is it the same in iris?

Teresa that's a really good question!! Shrug! it makes sense to me! I can't wait to get these to you all, especially since you're showing such much more interest than I expected (which is nice, I've always liked the blooms but not many of my friends really paid attention) Sticking tongue out I like knowing I have something worth trading Hilarious!
Cheers all
