I think iit would be interesting to know who grows Gerbera in the garden. Do you treat them as annuals? Are they perennial in some areas? What is your climate like and in what exposure do you grow them? What forum would be the appropriate place to discuss?

I have managed to both grow them from seed and keep them alive for a couple of years by keeping them in clay pots (they dry out more quickly, so less danger of rot) in a somewhat shady area in my garden here in the frozen northland. My main problem is overwintering them without them getting eaten alive by aphids.

Plants Admin

They're perennial here, and the trick to keeping them alive is to plant them high. The crown has to be well out of the ground or the plant won't survive.

Gerbera jamesoni is Perennial here in my area too and I agree with Zuzu, the crown must be well above ground. During a rainy season years ago I lost some that were planted too low. Something's been eating mine this year.

I grow them here in Tucson as well and they grow as a perennial. Mine are in pots. Pretty tough plants. Planting the crown high is a good suggestion as Zuzu stated.

I grew them when I lived in Zone 10 & they are perennial there also. They MUST have some shade down there & they suffer during the height of the summer but if you can manage to get them established & keep them going for about 3 years then you have them for life. As the others stated the crown must be planted high. They require a good deal of watering down there though.

They also grow as perennials here in my new zone in North Fl. They do much better up here & suffer less mildew & fungus than down south. They require less babying here too.

Years ago for one year, I planted Gerbera into containers (14", I think) and the wild rabbits hopped up, by using shorter (12") containers, sat and eat every bit of them! Grumbling Thumbs down Sad

They're annuals here and I love them, so next time I'm going to plant them, I need to plant them into much taller (16" and up) containers. I'm not using any thing less than 16" containers now.
