Anyone know genus, species on this one?
It has little structures on the centers of the leaves(what are these?), and sends up new stems from the roots. Thanks for your help.Thumb of 2012-12-21/freddy0808/0c289e

Can you show a pic from the side also?

Hi, purpleinopp,
Here is the best I could do with my camera. Some of the leaves have the structures on the bottoms of the leaves instead of the tops!
And here's a shot of the base of the plant....
Thanks for your help on this one. StephanieThumb of 2012-12-30/freddy0808/ca3a27

It's a long time since I came across this type of plant! With a bit of searching I found Ruscus hypoglossum ..

http://www.botgard.ucla.edu/ht...

There's more than one species, Ruscus microglossus looks close.

Others are similar!

So that is an inflorescence but arising from a branch that looks like a leaf. Amazing! Fantastic job Janet and great links.

Looks like Janet has identified this one. I found a similar one in the ATP database:

Butcher's Broom (Ruscus hypoglossum)

Wow!!!! Thanks to all of you. I'd never seen anything like it, though it seems like it should be a nice plant. The lady that I got it from at the church plant sale said she had a nice, full pot of it. I'm looking forward to seeing what my rather ratty pieces will turn into. Thanks again, now I can sleep at night! Stephanie

Interesting...I have ruscus aculeata which is very tough and apparently has a long life as it has sat neglected beneath a tree for years. R.aculeata has short, stiff leaves terminating in a sharp 'spine'. It also gets the inflorescense and red berry. I have, in the past, used it to make wreaths. Very stiff habit which dries to a nice tan. The wreaths last for years.....however, it's quite prickly to handle.
I could be wrong...

Now I know where Sarcococca ruscifolia got it's species epithet from! I have photos of that so I should put them in the database.

Freddy, I LOVE this plant, it's so unusual and vigorous looking! It's somewhat similar to Callisia fragrans, from what I can see in your pics (which are excellent, btw - I just had no idea what it is!)
