Sauerkraut for Christmas

By Sharon
December 24, 2012

I can't talk of cabbage without mentioning sauerkraut, and I can't think of sauerkraut without remembering the Christmas I gave it all away.

I add onions to sauerkraut too, in addition to caraway seeds and brown sugar. Yum!

Sounds like my summer staple, cabbage, black beans, onions, garlic, cucumbers, green peppers and tomatoes drenched in vinegar and olive oil. With a carrot or two thrown in. And a sliced boiled egg on the side.
My protein fix for the day.

And I beg to differ. Not *everyone* can grow cabbage! I surely can't! (Bugs get mine every time!) I've always liked sauerkraut; I'd have been more likely to give away the jam! Hilarious!

Everyone could and did grow cabbage in the mountains when I was growing up. It must have loved the mountains. I have some trouble with bugs here too now, but then I'm not in the mountains anymore. Big Grin

Sharon, there was except maybe for a radio, nothing much else to do and the droning of the radio used to lull one to sleep.
Stunk up reminds me, try cooking Mouli(Asian white radish) in gravy form.

You're right, not much else to do except read or listen to the radio.

But Mouli - I read the link and it doesn't sound very good to me. But then cabbage stinks when it's cooked too and I love cooked cabbage. Maybe it's all just an acquired taste. Big Grin

I like raw cabbage of all sorts.
Boiled cabbage is a dish I love, even though it does not smell good when cooking.
I like cabbage rolls too, but no sourkraut. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
I never acquired that taste. Maybe I got a bad batch when a child.

Who knows what causes us to like one thing but not another?

Some people just never develop a taste for certain things. We used to pickle both corn and green beans, I loved both. It's like adding a touch of hot peppers to your salad, a sudden surprise to the taste buds in the middle of a meal of meat and potatoes.

My son will eat fresh cabbage just like lettuce on a sandwich, but will only eat kraut if it's smothered and hidden well in mashed potatoes.

Acquired taste maybe?

Actually sauerkraut's really good with mashed potatoes, the bland and the sour sort of balance each other. It's one of my favorite combos.

when i got out of high school. i help this old man and lady, The man was very sick. So while she took care of him, I helped cook.
She asked did I know how to make Kraut and Dumplings? I knew how to make Egg noodles, she said Yes if I could do that all I had to do was add them to boiling sauerkraut. Evidently I did a good job, cause they both ate them. I tasted them. They were o.k. But Chickens and dumplings are much better....
